Nice Wheels: The Latest in Limited Edition Strollers

The Latest Strollers Making Hip Parents Drool

By now you've heard of that trendy parents across the nation are plunking down a grand for a designer pram without hesitation. But did you know that designers are now getting into the action? That's right there's a lot of news in the world of luxury strollers.

Graco was one of the first stroller companies to team up with a design talent. In 2006, they brought fashion designer Cynthia Rowley on board to update the design of their moderately priced Mosaic stroller. The limited edition Mosaic stroller is covered in an adorable fruit print-a signature of Rowley's feminine and whimsical designs. Style-conscious moms on a budget loved the fun fruit design and responded to Graco's feel-good clause: With each purchase a donation is made to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. If you're interested, there are still a few of these available but you'll have to hurry before they disappear. ($200)

This year another female designer is getting in on the baby action. In September, Lela Rose unveiled her exclusive Quinny Buzz Stroller. Rose's limited edition stroller features a thumbprint design and splashes of red. Rose says she was inspired by the "handiwork" of her two kids when dreaming up this zippy stroller. And like the traditional Buzz design, this limited edition stroller has all the bells and whistles: a reversible/reclining stroller seat, hydraulic technology, and height-adjustable handle. Included with purchase are a sun canopy, storage basket, rain shield, wind stoppers, bug net and Maxi-Cosi Mico car seat adapters. To generate additional "buzz" Quinny limited the production to 300 strollers. ($999.99)

Bugaboo should most likely be credited for the high-end stroller craze. They are also doing something unusual with a retail partner to stir up some media attention. Bugaboo created a special silver Bugaboo Cameleon stroller for the Neiman Marcus 100th birthday celebration. This Bugaboo stroller will feature a dark gray base with metallic silver tailored fabric. Selling for more than a grand, the special stroller will be sold exclusively at Neiman Marcus as of mid-October (price includes a blanket and special silver cup holder). We'll see if parents scramble to snatch up one of the 560 pieces. ($1,199)

If you're looking for something a little more conservative, you'll love the preppy stroller from Lacoste. The hip-once-again French tennis house worked with Maclaren to produce a lightweight stroller called the "Croc Walk." Rolled out in October this year, the buggy features Lacoste's classic green crocodile logo and Maclaren's dependable features. Suitable from birth up to 55 lbs., the buggy weighs just under 15 lbs. and offers parents one-hand umbrella fold capability, 4-position seat recline, and front/rear wheel suspension. What's more, this spiffy Maclaren buggy includes a coordinating Lacoste sportswear ensemble for baby. Once again, to create hype, they've capped production so grab one of these soon. ($400)

One cool ride you probably won't be able to get your hands on is the Paul Smith stroller from Orbit. Unveiled this summer at a special press event, the drool-worthy stroller was decked out in a custom Paul Smith stripe fabric. The California company known for their system of strollers (they retail for $900) with the capacity to turn 360 degrees apparently wants this stroller exclusively in the hands of the parental a-list.

With designers outdoing themselves to create cool custom rides it seems design-junky parents have a lot to feast on this fall. It's up to you to decide whether you want your child to ride in style.

I know I will never get my hands on one of these limited edition strollers, but they are nice to drool over. I love the Orbit!
