Niche Markets: Their Relation to Your Online Store
The Importance of Creating a Niche for Your Online Store
First, you may be asking yourself "what exactly is a niche market?" I niche market focuses on a specific target in the market meant to draw in specific group of people. The most effective niche markets are ones that have not yet been addressed and markets that need improvement. Creating a niche market is slightly more difficult online because it covers a broad spectrum of interests and markets.
Now let me give you an example of a hypothetical online business. Let's say for example, I want to open an online store that carries computer products. Now, how do I create a niche market for the store?
Choose a niche market you are already interested in
If you are not interested in the niche market for your online store it in, it is a sure formula for failure. If you are already interested in a market you probably already have knowledge of the product. Let's go back to the scenario for moment. I want to open the store that carries computer products but I dislike computers and have limited knowledge about them. Even with serious dedication and research my store will not be as successful someone who has a store that loves computers. You cannot force yourself into a niche market - you have to like what you are doing in order to be successful.
Selecting the market
First, I want to check how saturated the market is for computer products. We all know this is a fairly popular subject with many people. You don't want to pick a topic that is too marketed - and computer products are found everywhere. But you don't want to pick a market that is under saturated either. For example, you wouldn't want to choose the market of ergonomic wireless computer keyboards because that puts severe limitations on the size of your store and limits the number of potential customers you will attract
Choosing a niche: the dangers of being too general
Your niche market should be general but there are limitations on how general you should be. Going back for example, "computer products" covers a huge market and would create an enormous online store. This may work for you later on, but a store that large would be difficult to maintain when you start out. Also, if you're niche market is too general it is difficult for search engines to find you unless you are already a major web site.
Choosing a niche: the dangers of being too specific
Let's go back to what we are discussing in selecting the market. You decide to open an online store that carries only ergonomic wireless computer keyboards. Being this specific limits the number of products can carry. Since your products are limited, your keywords will be limited too. Again, this will create the issue of search engines and people not being able to find you.
Proper selection of a niche market
Since we already know the niche market we want to target is computer products, the decision is made narrow the niche. We already know that carrying ergonomic wireless computer keyboards is too narrow - but how do we reach a compromise? In this case, you want to target the niche market of computer accessories. This will allow you to carry a number of products, have a good selection of keywords that can be found by search engines, and will target a specific group of people.
Before you create your niche market ask yourself a couple questions:
1. Is there a need for demand for the product you are going to carry in your niche market?
2. Can you offer something the competition does not?
3. Is your niche market too general? Are there ways to narrow it down?
4. Is your niche market too specific? Are there ways to expand your niche market?
5. Will your niche market draw in the needed traffic to your online store?
By asking these questions and following the guidelines you should be able to find an effective and appropriate niche market for what you want to sell. The first step to opening a successful online store is by first creating a successful niche market. Keep in mind if you choose something you like, are willing to do research, work really hard, and are careful in the selection of your niche market your online store or business will eventually reach success.
