Nick Cannon Keeps Silent on Mariah Carey's Maternal Status

Mary Thatcher
Nick Cannon, the husband of singer Mariah Carey, deserves a lot of credit for not telling reporters about her possibly being pregnant. No doubt he does not think it is something that should not be blabbed all over the media and end up on the racks by the grocery store checkout, but also because he has the old-fashioned view that pregnancy is something private. A pregnant woman a private thing? Even though I am childfree and nullipara, I can totally understand where he is coming from. Contact Music.com reports that Nick says his wife will talk about her being pregnant when she is good and ready, and that it is not for him to discuss with reporters. Now that is rare, a husband respecting his wife's privacy like that, much less a celebrity husband. At any rate, Nick may be establishing a new trend: celebrities, pregnancy, and privacy.

The big question is, exactly why does the media insist on keeping tabs on celebrities who are getting pregnant? Moreover, why does the media think the public likes to keep tabs on female celebrities who are expecting? Like Fred Mertz said to Ricky Ricardo in an episode of "I Love Lucy", women get pregnant and give birth every day, so it is no big deal. I admit to being one of those who does not particularly care if a female celebrity is pregnant, is trying to get pregnant, or just gives birth (again, which is usually splashed all over the magazines at the grocery checkout). The media's entire obsession with "baby bumps" - and it is an obsession - does not seem to make for a normal, healthy functioning pop culture. ThirdAge even goes so far as to post a few photos of Mariah, asking the question of her having a baby bump, even though she is wearing a black dress. Black is not a color that easily reveals creases, folds, or bumps. Maybe ThirdAge is simply trying to make something appear on Mariah's body that really is not there. What the media should do is stick to what they do best in Mariah's case: report whenever the talented singer is about to release a new disc, tour, or television appearance. Staying out of her private life - the private life of any celebrity - is one thing the media does not do best.

Nick Cannon is best known for his appearances in the movies "Drumline", "Love Don't Cost A Thing", and "Roll Bounce." Mariah Carey is well known for her top 20 hits "Vision of Love", "Dreamlover", "Hero", and "Honey."
