The first single off I'm Taking Off is Just One Kiss. The song is a fairly generic pop-rock track. The track sounds fairly modern but still seems a little clichéd. The thumping drum definitely elevates the song.
The album opens with Burning Up featuring Briton "Briddy" Shaw. The song is a standard run of the mill dance track. Compared to other dance tracks on the market, the song just does not have the same energy or delivery. Rapper Briton "Briddy" Shaw drops a very short and somewhat memorable verse toward the end.
So Far Away might be the best track on the album. The song is very interesting melodically and finds Nick at his sweet spot vocally.
Great Divide features very hard urban drums which just seem to overshadow the track. The song would be better if there were different drums used.
Nothing Left To Lose is a very Jesse McCartney sounding track. The concept and writing are fairly solid but Nick's airy vocals do not shine on the track.
Special is another standout track. The song features interesting production and Nick delivers a fairly solid vocal especially on the verses.
Falling in Love Again starts as a very bland ballad but builds at the chorus into a much better track while upping the tempo.
The title track I'm Taking Off has a definite 1980's synth heavy feel. The song is retro to a fault. The chorus is definitely the most interesting element of the track.
Jewel in My Heart features some Backstreet Boys' sounding harmonies. The vocal arrangement is definitely the high point of the track.
Nick Carter is never going to be known as the strongest vocalist and I'm Taking Off does not do a good job of fitting his vocals with appropriate songs. The songs just seem to overshadow his vocal ability. There is some very solid material to be found on the album if you really look. Overall I'm Taking Off gets 6.5 out of 10. If you are a fan of Nick Carter make sure you import I'm Taking Off from Japan and catch the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block on tour this summer.
