The novel follows the story of an outcast mute boy named Euchrid Eucrow who sees the world through his own mad yet angelic vision. Euchrid is born into a cruel and unusual world that doesn't want him and finds his only compassion through an unusual kin-ship with the family ass. Enduring the laments and rage of a drunken mother and a father who has detached from reality. Euchrid starts to paint his own picture of what the world should be. His visions of an angelic world are corrupted by his demented mind and his growing separation from the rest of mankind and its unwillingness to accept him. The story is told through Euchrid's narration of horrors and and obsession using his mute southern slang. The story escalates as Euchrid unfolds a vengeful plan for the valley he lives in and the fanatic Ukulites who run the town with their own twisted religion. His lust for the beautiful prostitute Casey Mo and her pink caravan draws him further into their world and brings them into his own where he has crafted a deadly game of redemption and vengeance.
Nick Cave expertly crafts a cruel and inhumane portrait of man's inability to cope with fear and the unknown. His words are painted beautifully with the skilled tongue of a veteran bard. His book speaks the words of a dark prophet who writes from the cold forgotten spaces of man's inner thoughts and fears. The world Mr. Cave has created will suck you in like few others you have experienced, the inventive and unique language that his characters speak make you feel as if you are traveling back into time into a place where few have traveled. Like his music, the craft and level of word-smithing in his novel will amaze your senses and delight your intellect. The story is believable and woven with characters that force the reader to embrace and love or become disgusted by their true and un-relenting nature. His creations are not just merely names in a book but pulsating, walking, and intellectually intriguing characters that reflect the inner depths of man's evil side.
Cave wrote the book in his Berlin apartment when he wasn't on tour with his band the Bad Seeds and amidst his own addiction to herion. Several characters from Cave's music also make their way into the novel such as the infamous Crow Jane from his award winning album Murder Ballads. Cave's talent for writing is un-paralleled in the music industry and with a follow-up novel soon to be released he is establishing himself as a writer of immense talent capable of producing modern classics. The Death of Bunny Munro is Cave''s highly anticipated follow-up novel that is set to be released in September of this year.
And the Ass Saw the Angel is a culmination of genius and madness that is a literary masterpiece and harrowing tale of love, pain, and sacrifice. Cave's works are assured to become long-standing cult classic sand are a most read for fans of his music and anyone who enjoys a tale of ,fear, lust and the darker side of man's imagination.
