Does Nickelodeon Keep Its Promises of Good Halloween Fun?

Heather K. Adams
If you've got a budding gamer in your home, one place that promises spooky Halloween fun is Nickelodeon's Shocktober site at www.nick.com/shocktober. Nick.com/Shocktober's home page offers scary Halloween graphics, games, quizzes and more. My first grader played around with the various Halloween games, and here is his honest review of Nick.com/Shocktober.

Nick.com/Shocktober: Nick.com's Scream Site

The Halloween game at Nicktropolis allows you to transform yourself into a werewolf or vampire, and then use that character to play against other kids. My son created a Halloween character with a green mohawk, light blue skin, and funky clothes. He made his character go to the Pumpkin Patch and said, "Oh my god, Mom, the pumpkin patch was awesome!"

He went to the Skeleton Museum, the Mummy's Temple, and the Vampire's Cave. It was a multi-player game against other kids on the internet, and my son got changed into a vampire. "It was pretty haunted and scary. It almost made my brain freak out!" my son said.

Nick.com/Shocktober: Halloween Games

For some reason, we were unable to access the Halloween Games link on the Nick.com/Shocktober website. We got the error "Page not found".

Nick.com/Shocktober: Scaracter Creator

There are three categories for creating your Scaracter: head, torso, and legs. Choose body parts from any Nickelodeon character and mix and match it up to create a truly terrifying creature. My son used Danny Phantom's head, the body of Frances (the bully from The Fairly Oddparents), and Spongebob Squarepants' legs. For accessories, my son chose chains, a crow, a parrot, witch hat, spider, horns... well, I think he used them all.

He named his Scaracter 'Cont' because he's a haunt, and 'Cont' rhymes with haunt. His only disappointment with this program was that he wasn't able to play with his Halloween Scaracter. The options once you create your Scaracter is to print it out, email it to friends, or submit it to Nickelodeon for a chance to have your Scaracter featured on Halloween.

Nick.com/Shocktober: Shocktober Games Tournament

The only tournament game available was Nicktoons Slimeball. Like the Halloween games, Nicktoons Slimeball would not load for us, which was very disappointing for my son.

Nick.com/Shocktober: Final Verdict

When I asked my son what he thought about the Nick.com's Halloween website, he said, "Eh, good." His favorite game was the Halloween game at Nicktropolis, which was found by clicking on the Nick.com's Scream Site link.

I think many of the links on Nick.com/Shocktober didn't load because the popularity of the site was causing issues with Nick.com's server. I am technologically-challenged, so I'm only assuming. Overall, based on my son's reactions, I would rate Nick.com/Shocktober a two out of five stars.

LOL Hartley... my son was so excited to help Mom with her article that he asked if we could review other game sites soon!

Great review. Once that boy comes of age, he ought to think about opening up an account here. :P

I'm surprised my 6-yr-old son hasn't checked this out yet. I'll have to tell him about it, and, hopefully, more of the links will work for us. Good article!
