The outrageous Nicki Minaj let MTV and the world take a sneak peek at her life before she released her album in the documentary "My Time Now." It let fans know about her struggles growing up and helped viewers identify with the rookie rapper. Nicki Minaj's Background
The Trinidad-born rapper had so much hype behind her before she even released her album. She sums this up as she raps, "50K for a verse, no album out" on Kanye West's "Monster."

Nicki Minaj donned her fabulous pink wig and broke records in 2010. She topped Billboard's Rap/Hip-Hop chart and was recently crowned Woman of the Year by mtvU. So where did this multi-faceted force come from?

The documentary showed how Nicki Minaj lived with her grandmother in Trinidad while her mother was in Queens , New York trying to get things established before sending for her daughter. Minaj described her account of the first day she arrived in the city and how her father had a drug problem.

Nicki Minaj's Characters
She described how she would create characters to escape her problems. Her alter egos on Pink Friday include Barbie, Roman Zolanski and his mother Martha. Barbie has a delicate voice, Roman is a boy who says all of the mean things that Minaj doesn't and Martha has a British accent.

Returning to Trinidad
The cameras followed her to Trinidad as she reunited with her family. Viewers got to see a sensitive side to her as she took them on a shopping spree and explained that she wanted to buy her family whatever they wanted because she loved them. It didn't seem like she was flaunting her money, but felt genuine instead. "My Time Now" also showed parts of her Trinidad concert and how she reached out to her fans.

Nicki Minaj the Business Woman
One of the most important parts of this documentary was how much work Nicki Minaj puts into her music. Viewers were able to see her in the studio and she revealed her songwriting process. Her determination and gusto to keep going and run her brand was very inspiring.

The Pressured Artist
Towards the end of the documentary, Nicki Minaj started to reveal how the stress to stay on top of her career was getting to her. She apologized to her staff for the times that she snapped at them and explained that she was afraid of failure.

She was in tears as she thanked them for all of their hard work. She is so interesting and seems so genuine, but her breakdown also made me recall that she had studied acting at LaGuardia High School in Manhattan .
