Nick's Big Mistake

Kelly Woodcox
Someone was knocking at the door. Selena was surprised because she usually didn't get visitors during the day. As she opened the door, a man came bursting in, and grabbed her. As he forced himself to get her under control, she lost her balance. It was enough to knock her over. As Selena fell to the floor, she hit her head so hard that she passed out. The man proceeded to duct tape her legs and arms together. He also put a piece of cloth in her mouth and duct taped her mouth.

After about 5 minutes Selena came back around struggling to get lose. She was screaming but it was muffled by the cloth and the tape. "Where is it?" The man asked. She tried to say something and he took the tape off of her mouth and removed the cloth. She started to scream, but he got out a knife and held it to her throat.

She then calmed down and her voice was extremely shaky as she said, "Where is what?"

The man then proceeded up her stairway to the bedrooms. She started yelling, so he ran back down and put the cloth back in her mouth and the duct tape. Then he took the knife and glided it softly across her face. He said, "if you yell again this knife will be cutting your face up and not just tracing it!"

When he got upstairs he realized there was a young child (he was actually a 4 year old) sleeping in the bed.

"A Nap, Huh?" Well get up kid, we have some work to do.

Little Braxton was confused, "what work?"

"We have to find ourselves a tape that your daddy recorded."

"What's a recorded", said the boy.

"Just shut up kid," the man said."

This man and his friend had recently embezzled a lot of money from a large factory in Indiana. When Nick, Selena's husband found out, he hid a tape recorder under the desk where they sat for hours at night working and manipulating the books, so they could get away with hundreds of thousands of dollars. After they left that evening Nick went to confiscate the tape recorder but he didn't have a place to put the whole thing so he stuck just the tape in his pocket. Nick didn't know the men would be back, but sure enough they came back with some food from McDonald's. Nick was very nervous and didn't really know what to do or say so he said. "I was just looking for a phone number," and he left hurriedly.

The two men became suspicious and started looking around. It didn't take them long to find the recorder under the desk, only they became aware that the tape wasn't in there.

Later on, the day that Selena was attacked, Nick came home from work. He ran over to her and took off the tape and she started screaming and crying. He has Braxton, he took him, he has Braxton.

"Who?" "said Nick."

I don't know some man. "We need to call the police Nick!" she wailed.

"Wait a minute, what did this guy look like?"

"I don't know" she said. He was tall with blondish hair and a mustache. He had a very deep voice.

"Oh my gosh"! Nick cried out. "This is all my fault! I tried to get this guy in trouble for stealing money from work. They must have found out somehow".

Nick decided to call the police. When they arrived he let the police listen to the tape and told them everything. "The man you are looking for is Larry Jankston," Nick said.

The police said they would find him and he had a record but they didn't believe he was dangerous "mostly just all talk," the marshal said.

It wasn't long before the police came back with Braxton. The police said they were looking into the evidence and said this guy will be put away for along time. They, also called an ambulance because Selena was complaining of back pain.

Later they found out she was okay and it was just some bruising from the fall. Braxton was fine and untouched and Nick said to his wife, "Don't worry. Next time I'll call the police first and let them catch the person".

His wife sighed and Braxton hugged her tightly. Then Nick moved in closer to hug the both of them. This was a good ending for a very bad and haunting 4 hours. "I love you, Mommy," said Braxton.

She held him tighter and said, "I love you too Braxton." Nick started crying quietly as they lay there holding each other.
