Nicole Buffett Disowned by Billionaire Grandfather Warren Buffett
"For Him to Discard Me like that was Devastating"
According to Marie Claire Magazine, the controversy stems from Nicole's appearance in The One Percent, a documentary by Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical heir Jamie Johnson that explores the fact that one percent of America's richest citizens control nearly half of the nation's wealth.
"I've been very blessed to have my education taken care of, and I have had my living expenses taken care of while I'm in school," says Nicole Buffett in the film. But when asked in the film how she thought her grandfather Warren Buffett would react to her appearance in it, she said, "I definitely fear judgment. Money is the spoke in my grandfather's wheel of life."
That she feared judgment from her grandfather Warren Buffet for appearing in The One Percent has turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Warren Buffett was outraged by her comments. He reportedly told his son Peter (Nicole's adoptive father) that he resented Nicole for taking on the self-appointed role of family spokesperson. A month after she appeared in the film, Warren Buffett mailed her a letter in which he wrote: "I have not emotionally or legally adopted you as a grandchild, nor have the rest of my family adopted you as a niece or a cousin." Ouch.
With the help of Jamie Johnson, Nicole attempted to repair the damage. To that end, Johnson filmed a follow up interview with Nicole in which she stated the following: "To pretend like we don't have a familial relationship is not based in reality. I've spent years of my life at his home in Omaha. I'm shocked and hurt." This attempt at a reconciliation, however, was unsuccessful.
Nicole Buffett is not a blood relative of Warren Buffett. Might that have something to do with the frosty tone of his letter? When Nicole was 4, her mother married Peter Buffet, Warren Buffet's youngest child. Peter adopted both Nicole and her identical twin sister. Until their estrangement, Nicole had enjoyed a relatively close relationship with her grandfather. And she had always felt accepted by the family.
But the blood is thicker than water argument doesn't fly in this case. Especially when you consider the fact that Warren Buffett refers to inherited wealth as "the ovarian lottery." Warren Buffett has made it a rule to pay for the college education of each of his grandchildren - whether they are blood relatives or not - but nothing more.
This is unquestionably a sad story. It always is when family members become estranged. Was Warren Buffett's reaction too harsh? Was it really necessary for him to summarily dismiss Nicole for her transgression? This writer's answer to the foregoing questions is yes to the former, and no to the latter. Also, it seems to me that Warren Buffett can be cold and vengeful. In the interest of fairness, though, when your as rich as Warren Buffet, it's reasonable for you to question whether a person's attention and affections are based upon sincerity or what you can do for them monetarily.
Meanwhile, Nicole Buffett is surviving. She's a talented artist whose work has sold for as much as $8,000 apiece. She supplements her income by working part time at a boutique in San Francisco. Her annual income is $40,000 - which is, to be sure, a far cry from the billions of dollars a year that Warren Buffett earns, but she's not poverty stricken either. She'll make do. And, who knows, there could be a silver lining in the shattered relationship with her grandfather. Like a book deal, perhaps.

Post a CommentI would do the same thing, I have a number of neices that are in-laws and took my last name (I was one of only 5 people with my last name in Australia) and now they speak as if they have been a part of the family all along. If they ever mentioned or infered that they were getting a cent of my money or that they would benefit from my accomplishments, I would tell them straight up that they are no family of mine.
He did the right thing. He is not the money greedy gorilla she made him out to be in the documentary. He's a very humble, down to earth man and wants his family to stand up on their own and not use his name for free fame wealth. She tried to become the next Paris Hilton and I guess she is still succeeding by appearing in different magazines and trying to garner sympathy.
She has earned nothing on her own at all. She should have kept her mouth shut and earn her own way in life. But no, she had to become famous by demolishing the name of her grandfather; a man who lives a very simple life on a modest salary although he can afford to splurge but refuses to. His billions of dollars have provided millions of jobs also, so don't forget that when you badmouth him. All he wants is to lead a simple, paparazzi free lifestyle, but if someone stupid from the younger generation who is not even a blood relative tries to destroy his hard earned reputation, whats he supposed to do? Stand by and le
I'm hoping for a follow-up article wherein their reconciliation will be reported. People get over anger; I hope Mr. Buffett's will soften with time.
Interesting....I suspect there is more to the story than her appearance in the documentary.
His letter sounds so harsh. A bit late to be telling her she's really not his grandchild. Money makes people weird.....
Thank God Idon't have filthy rich relatives to disown me....who needs that in their life! :) Great article and something I knew nothing about!
I feel for her. I did go read the sourced article and I got the vibe that she just was really hurt that he'd treat her that way. Perhaps he didn't like her talking about his money the way she did, but how many of us have ever imagined what we'd do with a gazillion dollars? She just was a little closer to that dream than most of us. He did pay for her education, but I'd imagine his harsh note disowning her using the words he did, really made her feel awful considering she was adopted into the family (though her parents divorced). His note made her wonder if he'd been faking affection and praise all of these years... and that was what hurt the most.
There is bound to be a lot we don't about this. I'm sure he had reasons for his actions.
Very intriguing but hard to judge when I haven't been privy to the family relationships. As an adoptive parent, I don't care a bit about genetic connections. All my children are loved deeply, can't imagine turning my back on any of them but I've never been tested to the point where I'd give it a moment's serious thought. Considering some of the stunts they've pulled, that is really saying something ;)
Interesting. I don't think I'll pass judgment on either Buffet involved with this. It's always easy to state an opinion when you're an outsider.
