Nicorette and My Attempt to Quit Smoking

Chen Salis
I have been trying to quit smoking. If you have attempted to quit, you know how hard it can be. It seems like I am doing fine one minute, I don't even want to smoke then out of no where I turn into a moody, cranky nicotine fiend. It is embarrassing to admit I have a serious addiction to cigarettes.

I know I should and need to quit, smoking is a bad, expensive and possibly anti-social activity. I am not happy when I spend ten dollars on two packs of cigarettes. I am even less happy when I have greedily puffed away, and both packs are gone the next morning and I repeat the cycle.

I have tried quitting cold turkey, several times. That doesn't work. I will admit, several years ago I said I was quitting, I did for about two days and I resorted to hiding in the bathroom like a teenager smoking. Ashamed to admit defeat. I once tried a terrible method that was not at all effective. My aunt told me to wear a rubber band around my wrist, and every time I felt like smoking, snap the rubber band. It was mildly painful and it worked for about three seconds. I constantly snapped my wrist with the rubber band. I gave this method up after a few days. I was still smoking, granted it was less, but my wrists hurt...

Finally, I turned to nicorette white ice mint gum. I was lucky enough to get four packs for free, so I gave it a shot. I know many people who have been successful, and kicked the habit once and for all with the use of Nicorette gum. I unfortunately was not as fortunate.

My initial response was fear. I was hesitant to chew the gum, but I was hoping this would help me kick my fifteen year addiction. I found the process to be quite unappealing. Chew for a few seconds, tuck the gum in your cheek, then repeat. I was not into the burning sensation Nicorette gave me, and I didn't like the chew and tuck method. I also had an upset stomach after chewing this gum as directed through out the day. I still craved a cigarette. I kept up with the chewing for about 40 hours and then I caved.

I am glad I did not have to pay for my supply of Nicorette white ice mint gum because it was ineffective in my opinion, but I guess this type of product works differently for everyone.

If you have quit, CONGRATULATIONS!! Feel free to share any tips that assisted you in your goal of quitting. If you are trying, GOOD LUCK!
