Night and Day

Night And Day

The sun went up

The moon lay down

Running free across vast plains

Footfalls step with lion tracks

Spear-tip glistens a glimmer distant

Fearless wide-eyed ebony child

Sweetened yams taste tender tongues

Feeling wild freedom trail

The sun went up

The moon lay down

Ships sail violent vicious fury

Lives guided with hatred's storm

Chains bind common decency

Inhumane wins terrible battle

Suffered millions die gagged silence

Darkened death brewed grim horizon

The sun went up

The moon lay down

Chopping block sold humiliation

Mothers fathers children cry

Shackled broken backs toil burden

Building lands rivers run blood

Lorded men scatter beaten beasts

Separate tear family bond

The sun went up

The moon lay down

Bitter thoughts cold noose swinging

Terror burning peace away

Tears wash anguish time marching

Little girls extinguish church

Proud bus ride coming home

Fist raise high scream righteous justice

The sun went up

The moon lay down

Super-size sale harmful health

Undermining progress weath

Leaders lost found ignorance

Drug destructive baby's birth

Police harsh force brutal abuse

Disillusioned home-wreck youth

The sun went up

The moon lay down

Simple hope-fed confidence

Trying fabled dream for size

Instill value love of self

Healing battered soul triumphant

Chance of given hand extends

Wait for mule with promised land

The sun went up

The moon lay down

500 years of American history perpetuated the legalized slavery, torture, and murder of an estimated 50 million African slaves. In February I reflect on not only the nightmares but also the dreams of the African American struggle.
