Night Horses

Janis I. Monroe
The sun has set below the horizon
And night has taken over the field
Nocturnal animals adventure out in search of food
Or perhaps unexpected trouble

All while the horses calmly graze
A gentle wind blows
Slightly stirring the grass and trees
The crickets sing their beautiful serenade
Providing the horses with a tranquil melody

The horses feel safe with their surroundings
As long as they are together
However, when one is unexpectedly lost
They cry out in many toned whinnies
Until the missing is found

A pact they form
Knowing their strength lies in numbers
And they can defeat any enemy
Should a vicious predator stalk them
With powerful legs they will run
Their hooves heavily striking the ground
Sounding like thunder rolling across the land
