Night Markets and Street Markets: Anjuna, Goa, India

Retail and Wholsale Markets: Anjuna, Goa, India

When you go to the night market and flea market in Anjuna, Goa, India, be prepared to bargain. Try to pay half the price the vendor originally suggests or less if you're a savvy shopper. When you walk away or buy in quantity, you will get the best price.

Mackies Market: Mackies Market happens on Saturday nights; think 5 to 11 pm. This waterside market has both Indian and International vendors, as well as entertainment, food and alcoholic beverages. It is easier to park at Mackies Market than the Saturday Night Market, but both venues draw a considerable amount of traffic. This market is smaller and draws a more conservative crowd. Smoke at your own risk. Wholesale, retail and custom orders are possible. Clothes, jewelry and tapestries are the principal items sold. My friends recently got food poisoning from the falafel plate at Mackies Market. Bring at least 2000 rupees.

Saturday Night Market: The Saturday Night Market is open from about 5pm to 1am. This Anjuna, Goa wholesale and retail market has free parking, but it's tough to find a spot. Larger than Mackies Market, this market also has a more eclectic selection of live entertainment and garments. The Saturday Night Market attracts more international vendors featuring unique lines of clothing sold by the designer. Anticipate leather, lace and ninja boots. Eat chocolate desserts and pizza, while you sip on gourmet coffee drinks and cocktails. You are very likely to meet new people and make new friends here if you make a little effort. If you are in a buying mood you could easily spend over 3,000 rupees.

Wednesday Flea Market: The Wednesday Flea Market in Anjuna, Goa is open during the daylight hours from about 9 am to 7 pm. This is my favorite market because it's significantly more mellow than the night markets and offers a large selection of merchandise. Parking is easier, but costs 10 rupees. Not a flea market at all, this bazaar features new items from Indian and international vendors. Some Saturday vendors also vend the Wednesday Flea Market. Be prepared to beaten down by the sun if you don't cover your head. Food and cold drinks are available. A blues band jam, sit in if you've got talent, plays during the day. Once the market closes down, walk down the beach for about one minute and listen to some more live music. Bring at least 200 rupees but much more if you're serious about buying things.

Street Market in Mapusa: Hit the local scene and take your scooter, motorcycle or the bus to visit the Mapusa Market. By far the most chaotic, this Goa market only features Indian vendors and is packed with locals. Don't come on Sunday unless all you want is vegetables or used clothing.
