Nightlife Fun in Manhattan's East Side
Neighborhood: Lower East Side
New York City, NY 10003
United States of America
Though the adjacent areas of the East Village and Lower East Side, like most other NYC neighborhoods that are in a constant flux of change, it remains a lively and bustling place. Boasting the largest concentration of bars of any neighborhood in the city, there's always something to do in the Lower East Side. Whether it's one of many new venues or a longstanding institution, this neighborhood's nightlife has plenty to offer the young, hip and adventurous.

Head over to 170 Avenue A at 11th Street for a small, but stylish setting at Bar On A, or BOA. This corner establishment has been around for more than 15 years and offers cozy sofas as well as the usual bar tables and stools. A small, but tasty menu will satisfy that late night craving and goes great with one of the many beer offerings. You can then take an after-bar stroll a few blocks south to Avenue A and 7th Street to Tompkin's Square Park for lamp-lit scenery and some fresh air.

If you're one that requires something less lounge-like and a little more on the wild side, then head down to 113 Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side for an adventurous time at the Mehanata, a lively Bulgarian bar and club. Burn some calories on the dance floor listening to high energy Bulgarian pop music and have some of their alcoholic apple cider. Head downstairs to the Ice Cage where 20 dollars will get you two minutes in the glass enclosed vodka refrigerator, with dozens of the bottles lining the walls. Drink your fill while wearing Russian military coats and hats provided by the staff.

The stretch of St. Marks Place east of 3rd avenue offers a dizzying array of late night fare. Located at 113 Saint Marks place, this tiny joint specializes in the hot dog. Try one of their original wieners wrapped in bacon or topped with jalapenos and coleslaw. They're open until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 a.m. the rest of the week. If hot dogs aren't your thing, then try Pommes Frites at 123 2nd Avenue for some French Canadian style fries. The poutine, with chicken gravy and chunks of white cheddar, will sate any midnight snacking urges. Pommes Frites is open until 3:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
