Nightlife in Las Vegas: Cirque Du Soleil

Laura Leiva
If there's one thing that must be done in Las Vegas at one time or another, it's to see a Cirque du Soleil show. With five productions going on at the present, there's a show for everyone on the Las Vegas Strip. Here are the five Cirque du Soleil shows running in Las Vegas:

Love- Located at the Mirage Hotel and Casino, this production is the newest show to join the Cirque family. The show, which features acrobatics and freestyle dance, is choreographed to the re-mixed music of The Beatles. The selected Beatles songs are then interpreted through performances by the international cast. The Mirage custom-built the theatre for this production, featuring 360-degree views of the stage, panoramic video screens and surround sound. Prices for this show range anywhere from $70-150 depending on how close seats are to the stage. Shows are performed Thursday thru Monday. If you love the Beatles, this show is the one for you!

Ka- This Cirque du Soleil show is located at the MGM Hotel and Casino. Using martial arts mixed with dance, Ka uses puppets, multimedia and fire to tell a story of twins on a journey to their destiny. This show is different from the others in that it incorporates cinema with live action, and has a story being told through the twins. Ticket prices vary from $70-150 for adults and shows run from Tuesday through Thursday. Ka is a must see for people who like the martial arts, and and appreciate dance within the martial arts.

Zumanity- The New York-New York features Zumanity, an adult themed show based on creatures in a Human Zoo. The show style is cabaret-like, where each act stands on its own, not really combining for a theme. Zumanity revolves around the human desire, but with a sexual theme. The theatre in which Zumanity is performed is an elegant replica of a European opera house, complete with velvet walls and balconies. This show also has some topless dancers, therefore no one under 18 is allowed in. Prices range from $75 dollars for the balcony seats to
$290 for sofa seats close to the stage. The show runs Wednesday thru Sunday in the evenings only.

O- The Bellagio is host to 'O', a Cirque du Soleil show based mostly on water. The name, based on the French word for water, is an acrobatic show with 85 cast members performing above a 1.5 million gallon pool of water. Divers and synchronized swimmers are main features of the show, surrounding themes of fire, water and air. Each of these elements is part of the acts put on by numerous performers. The show runs Wednesday thru Sunday, with an average ticket price running from $137-200 depending on seat location.

Mystere- This show, featured at Treasure Island, is as close to a circus as one can get in any of the Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil shows. Characters take on anything from mystical creatures to little babies, all the while entertaining the audience. Beautiful colors, sounds and movements from the performers keep the audience captivated throughout the entire show. Mystere is performed Wednesday thru Sundays and the average price is $105.

Each Cirque du Soleil show interacts with the audience, prompting them to partake in acts, or intermissions. The performers in this company can do things one would never think could be done with the human body, making it fascinating and entertaining all at the same time. The show also unleashes the imagination, because most Cirque du Soleil shows are based purely on dance or acrobatics.

Each show runs 90 minutes, with the exception of 'O' at the Bellagio, which runs 1 hour and 45 minutes.

If there were only time and money for one show in Vegas, choosing a Cirque du Soleil show would be very wise. Not only is it highly entertaining, but it's also very memorable!

"O" is by far superior to the others... well worth it!!! "KA" was good (they are all good) but if you're going to spend the time in Vegas and the money to see a Cirque Du Soleil show, see "O"
