Have We Forgotten Why We're Fighting?

NINE-ELEVEN

The fifth anniversary of 9/11 has come and gone. Many people say 'Thank God, I'm 9/11'd out'. These are the same folks who think five years is a long time. It probably is to them. I think it is merely a blink of the eye to terrorists.

9/11 couldn't have, and didn't, happen overnight. It took long range planning by some rather sophisticated parties to pull it off. And let's not kid ourselves, all the terrorists have to do is watch the nightly news to know they are winning. We have had some of our freedoms suspended, we are subject to closer scrutiny when travelling, we suspect neighbours rightly or wrongly of being 'one of them'. In short, we have been scared out of our wits and the terrorists love it. They are winning even if they weren't fighting us in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Remember how you felt on 9/11? The civilized world rallied in support of the USA and demanded blood. President Bush called on us to help him in the fight against terror. And we responded quickly and without question. The tide has turned lately and it seems more and more people are against this war. I think it is because people don't understand this new type of warfare.
Most people can relate to WW II, where you had defined lines of friendlies vs enemies. They shot at you from somewhere and you shot back. Gains made by one side resulted in losses on the other, and everything was very neat, so to speak. You could plot the war on a map and make educated guesses as to what would happen next.

Not so in this war. As in Viet Nam, the enemy all look the same. But in Viet Nam you could at least distinguish between the villagers and the enemy army. Not so in this war.

The enemy all look the same. They dress the same. They don't fight out in the open, but rather from villages, hospitals and mosques. How brilliant a ploy is it to park your rockets next to a hospital you know the coalition forces are loathe to blow up? What a great idea to store your weapons in a mosque that you know 'The Great Satan' will spare.

This is a fight being waged under rules of engagement by one side against an enemy who knows no rules. A film worth watching can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/v/-HlaVpqUXF0 . It just might wake some people up.
President Bush was right on 9/11 and he is still right today. The mistakes he's made are easy to pick on. But the overall theme to his crusade is as valid today as it was then. He is not fighting 'freedom fighters', he is fighting terrorists. They are not 'suicide bombers', they are murderers. They are not 'insurgents', they are thugs. Pretending to be duly elected representatives of their countries, they still kill those of their own country and religion who disagree with them.
Pretending to want nothing other than peace, they still want to wipe out all infidels and see the world become an Islamic state. This is all very reminiscent of the build up to WW II. We fought that war despite Neville Chamberlain and his talks with Hitler. Now Jack Layton and a bunch of other cowards wants to end hostilities and talk with these unprincipled killers? What a slap in the face to those veterans who fought so valiantly for our freedom in wars gone by. What a slap in the face to those brave men and women who today are fighting not only to preserve our freedom, but to allow others a taste of what we seem to take for granted.

Stay the course Mr. Bush. Stay the course Mr. Harper. Stay the course Mr. Blair. History will prove you right in the end. And all freedom loving countries will thank you.

Sandy, thanks for the support against Mr. Moon. I wrote an article entitled After Thoughts and took him to task. I haven't heard from him since. I guess, like you said, he doesn't have anything intelligent to add. Thanks again.

Johnny Moon, we're not mad, you are. Obviously you support the terrorists. Well let's see how you feel if you lose a family member due to a terrorist attack. As Youranter said "Johnny Moon, maybe my articles get rated so high is because people who can READ can debate me or others without putting in such useless comments as yours." I thought this forum was for adults. Maybe when you're finished with elementary school and have some education, you can add some intelligent comment to the issues discussed here.

Johnny, I realize that you're lonely and need a new hobby. If you don't have anything intelligent to add to the debate, please go away.

nice echo chamber you guys got going in here. you do realize that you're all completely mad and without reason, right?

    Johnny Moon
I take it you have no family in the military. If you had you wouldn't write such dribble. Well, I have a son in the RAF, for your info:- (The Royal Air Force) I have a nephew in the American Air Force. Fighting against terrorism for the likes of you and your right to have an opinion.
CP and Lara Nichols I totally agree with what you both have to say.
Maybe it's time for us all to stand up against liberalism and people like Johnny Moon. The world would be a better place to live. Chamberlain had peace talks with Hitler and we know where that got us. It didn't work then and it won't work now. They started it and now that we have their attention, maybe when it's all over and they get some sense in their heads, we can talk.

CP & Lara Nichols, thank you for READING the article and your comments. Apparently some people don't know how to read.
NJrdr, what sweeping generalizations? I basically made the statement that I support Bush in his (our) fight to keep us free from terrorists. I'm sorry about your cousin, but I'll bet that had he survived 9/11, he would've wanted some terrorist butt served up to him.
Johnny Moon, did you read the article? You are in need of a history lesson son. The crusades of long ago were to keep Jerusalem free for all to enjoy, not just to keep Muslims from perverting it to their own train of thought. "We have no fear of any muslim terrorist taking it away though." Your quote. Where the hell were you on 9/11? The Muslims bombed your World Trade Center and murdered almost 3000 people. And you have the nerve to say they won't take away any of your rights? Give your head a shake.

    thanks for proving my point.

What I'm curious about is how this guy gets all of his articles rated so high? The conservatives who spend all of their time rating up articles here and pressing thumbs up on every doltish right wing comment really need to get their priorities straight.

  • Johnny Moon9/30/2006

Lara Nichols - first of all you act as of people whose families were lost in 9/11 are all Bush supporters - this is far from the case. Many of the people who lost family members in 9/11 know that Bush is a dispicable man who is doing everything wrong. Second of all if you really think Bush is thinking about the good of the American people you are completely brain washed. Third of all you are right to mention a fear of losing our freedoms to speak our mind - that is exactly what we are afraid of. We have no fear of any muslim terrorist taking it away though. The real fear is that this corrupt administration and thoughtless folks like you will be the cause of our loss of freedom!
