Nintendo's Wii Channels

Chris Tidwell
Nintendo's newest gaming system, the Wii, has some exciting a innovative features that were introduced during it's launch and are constantly updated. The Wii is known for it's remote control styled controller and point and click style, but beyond that the hardware itself and the features it offers are amazing. The Forecast Channel, Mii plaza, News Channel are all great features that get little attention by the media when talking about the system. Most everyone focuses on the remote and games that are released, but take for granted the amazing options available right on the Wii's start up screen.

The Forecast channel will allow you to check weather reports from around the globe, or in your local area. No waiting around for your local weather team to do a news report, you don't have to be in front of your television at any particular time, you just turn on the Wii and click the Forecast channel. This allows you to view your weather information at your leisure, and at your own pace. The Wii Forecast Channel is great for planning a trip to the store, or a trip across the country, or even a vacation around the world. The information used in the Wii's Forecast channel is updated frequently so you can stay ahead of the weather.

The News channel featured on the Wii is a nice take on the events of the world. News is mostly dull, violent, disturbing, and so on, but with the Wii it almost makes News ... fun!? The design of the news channel is something you'll have to experience for yourself, but it's a very interesting take on the news, but the great thing is that you can view top stories at you own pace, whenever you want to. This means you can check the news on your way to work, before going shopping, during or after dinner, before bed, whenever you want! Again Wii's news channel receives frequent updates to make sure you stay informed.

Now last here we have the Mii Plaza which is another channel offered by the Wii consul. This is the place where you can design and play with characters that look a lot like their users. Here at the Mii Plaza you can create a character that looks distinctly like you, or someone you know, or perhaps you just want to make something completely original, and the possibilities are endless. No matter what shape or form you want to give your Mii you'll find it here with thousands of different character combinations. Everyone who buy's or plays with a Wii is amazed at how much fun playing with this feature can be. I spent the first hour and a half with my new Wii playing with the Mii channel and in Mii plaza!

Overall the Wii is a great game system that has a lot to offer aside form games themselves. Many consul systems rely on software to survive, however the Wii has not only great software, but great hardware as well. The innovation of the Wii as a virtual consul is something not yet seen in a game system but might become standard in the very near future, and Wii is constantly updating and expanding. Check out the photo and shop channels too, and there are more channels available for purchase at the Wii shop, and there will be more arriving soon!
