Nintendo's Wii Remote Versus Nintendo Wii's Classic Controller

Andrew Berry
The Nintendo Wii is one of the new next generation consoles out there. Today's cutting edge technology allows the Nintendo Wii to use a wireless controller that uses a sensor to tell what buttons you're pressing and so on. But the Nintendo Wii also goes further, as you use the Nintendo Wii remote to control characters even in ways we thought were unimaginable. When using the Nintendo Wii, you sometimes point the remote directly at the television you're using to control such actions such as throwing a bowling ball, swinging a tennis racket, or hacking up an enemy with your sword. For some other games you use the Wii remote in other forms such as turning it sideways (horizontal), holding it vertical, and so on.

However, for other games, mostly classic games that are downloadable from the Wii Store, you may use a Nintendo Wii "Classic" controller. When playing some of these games, which include the original Super Mario, Bomberman, and others, you have to hold the Wii remote sideways, as if it were an actual controller from regular Nintendo (also known as NES). This is where the conflict comes into play.

Nintendo has created a Wii "Classic" controller, a rounded replica of a regular Nintendo controller that also contains more buttons, and a couple of analog sticks. So, instead of using your regular Nintendo Wii remote and turning it sideways to play these cult classics, you can buy a Nintendo Wii Classic controller and play it without having to turn a controller horizontally.

But which controller is better to use? There are pros and cons to both controller options, so it is merely preference. However, I am here to enlighten you about why I believe that using the default Nintendo Wii controller is better to use.

First of all, the Nintendo Wii Classic controller is sold separately, essentially making you spend more money. If you use the Wii default controller, you're saving yourself some money, but risking your comfort depending on your preferences. The Wii Classic controller costs around $20, according to www.Bestbuy.com. You shouldn't spend your money on something that isn't really necessary, as you can use that money to invest in another game. Some great games are coming out within the next year, including Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Super Mario Galaxies, and much, much more.

Secondly, the Nintendo Wii Classic controller feels to light and flimsy. The analog sticks on the Classic controller aren't that impressive either, and they seem rather over sensitive. The Classic controller overall is light in weight, and also needs to be connected to the default Wii remote via it's port on the bottom. In doing this, the Classic controller is somewhat weighed down, even if the default Wii remote is laid right beside the player. Since the Classic controller is connected, you must also keep in mind that you cannot easily get up, and you must be careful as to where you pull the Classic controller, to ensure that it doesn't fall on the floor and possibly break.

Thirdly, the Classic controller isn't necessary, it's merely luxury. Coping with the default Wii remote is easily learnable, and it also saves you some money, as I stated before. The default Wii controller is elongated and square, but it still fits the hands to a reasonable extent that is still very comfortable for players.

Overall, I believe it is best to just use the regular Nintendo Wii controller, rather than buying the Nintendo Wii Classic controller. Learning to use the default Wii is less costly, and there's hardly a difference when it comes to noticeable gameplay. Turning sharp corners, for instance, is a bit harder to do with the default Wii remote, but it is easy to cope with that by merely practicing. In the end, save your money, and just use the Nintendo Wii remote.

  • The Nintendo Wii is a next generation video game console.
  • For the Nintendo Wii there are two useable controllers: the remote and the classic controller.
  • Use the remote, as if saves you money and it still easy to use.
The Classic controller needs to be plugged into the Nintendo Wii remote to use it anyway.

Great idea for a review. I would have never thought of this. I had the hardest time thinking of products to compare. Lol, I compared catfood. Pathetic! I love the classic controller because, hey, I grew up with it. But the new one is really neat, how you can pretend to bowl and bat and everything. I think which one would be best would depend on the game you're playing.
