It's hard to know what to buy you Dad. You don't need clothes, or a new tie. I'm not sure what size shoes fit, but I'm sure you would stick them in the closet with the rest, and continue to wear that "old glove-comfortable" pair you always wear.
I did a little research, since I wasn't there when you were born. I thought since you were a farmer you would be interested to know that the price they were "getting" for a bushel of corn on your birthday on August 27, 1917 was $1.39.
According to Wikipedia, some of the news Grandma and Grandpa were reading and learning about was: on February 3rd WWI: The United States severs diplomatic relations with Germany, and on February 13, Mata Hari was arrested for spying.March 4, of that year President Woodrow Wilson began his second term.
On March 8th, the United States Senate adopted the cloture rule in order to limit filibusters. On May 13th; three peasant children claim to see the Virgin Mary above a Holm Oak tree in Cova da Iria near Fatima, Portugal. On May 26th a tornado struck Mattoon, Illinois, causing devastation and killing 101 people.
Now, Dad, in August, the month of your birth:
The Green Corn Rebellion, an uprising by several hundred farmers against the WWI draft, takes place in central Oklahoma.
On August 18th The Great Thessaloniki Fire of 1917 in Greece destroys 32% of the city, leaving 70,000 individuals homeless.
ON AUGUST 27, 1917 EFFIE AND KENSEL'S LITTLE BOY WAS BORN.
On August 29th The Military Service Act is passed in the Canadian House of Commons, giving the Government of Canada the right to conscript men into the army.
A few other births took place that year. Zsa Zsa Gabor, on Feb 6th. Desi Arnaz, on March 2nd. May 21st, Raymond Burr. May 29th John F. Kennedy. June 7th Dean Martin. June 15th, Cowboy actor, Lash LaRue.
I hope this is the best birthday ever, Dad. I hope is that you receive at least 94 cards and birthday wishes.
I hope today is filled with laughter and joy. Maybe you could even take in a little sky-diving? Who knows?
Eat lots of cake, and take an extra nap.
