It had very little chance of success. The public, in general, expected little from this American rock band with only one record under its belt so far. But, much to the surprise of everyone, Nevermind became a huge success in 1991, just one year after being recorded.
With such #1 singles as "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Lithium" and "Come as you Are" (which hit #32 on the Billboard chart), Nevermind brought this relatively unknown band into the spotlight and turned what was only its second album into its first #1 on the charts.
In the recording of Nevermind, which was produced by Butch Vig, Kurt Cobain attempted to break away from the grunge-rock image and bring alternative rock to a much larger and diverse audience.
His guitar sounds in Nevermind, set the tone for '90s rock and turned him into a legend of sorts. In January 1992, Nirvana pushed Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" right out of the number #1 spot and replaced it with Nevermind, which went on to be a 10-time-platinum album and sell over 30,000 copies before going diamond on March 24, 1999.
In the U.S. and Canada, Nevermind is known as the greatest rock album of the '90s. Kurt Cobain succeeded in what he was striving to do: to bring rock to a whole new level and get a more diverse group of people listening to and enjoying his music.
