For the following reasons, though, I do not belief Nissan's recall will be as damaging to Nissan's reputation as Toyota's recall has been to Toyota's reputation:
Reason Why The Nissan Recall Is Not Too Serious #1: Magnitude. Obviously, 540,000 is a lot less than 8.5 million. If it were not for the massive Toyota recall, Nissan's recall might not even be a major news item.
Reason Why The Nissan Recall Is Not Too Serious #2: Reputation. Toyota was damaged by its recall because Toyota has a reputation for error-free manufacturing. In the business world, Toyota is frequently used as an example of a company with a near-perfect manufacturing process, and yet they somehow managed to botch 8.5 million products. Nissan, on the other hand, has not based its reputation on flawless manufacture. That is not to say that customers will be pleased with the recall. But at least having a recall does not undermine Nissan's brand as directly as the Toyota recall undermined Toyota's.
Reason Why The Nissan Recall Is Not Too Serious #3: Lack of Incidents. The Toyota recall occurred after actual accidents started happening. Toyota appeared, therefore, to be compelled to recall its vehicles; some people have even speculated that there was some kind of cover-up and resistance to a recall by Toyota. In the case of Nissan, there are not any reported accidents resulting from the cited defects. Nissan might come away from this looking like the good guy, because it acted so quickly to correct the problems once they were discovered.
A recall is never good news for a company. The bottom line here is that Nissan messed up. But Nissan's errors are not of the same magnitude as Toyota's, and for the reasons cited above, this Nissan recall is not likely to be as damaging to Nissan as Toyota's recall has been to Toyota. Hopefully, we will not have to endure a "we messed up, and we're sorry" ad campaign from Nissan, like the one Toyota is inflicting upon us.
