NJ Horse Angels Ordered to Pay Restitution

Donations at Legitimate Horse Rescue Decline Due to NJ Horse Angels Scam

Kay Baxter
The NJ Division of Consumer Affairs has ordered Sharon Catalano-Crumb and Frank Wikoff of NJ Horse Angels infamy, to repay $80,428.00 of misappropriated donations, and cease all operations of their unregistered horse rescue in order to settle the lawsuit brought against them.

Crumb and Wikoff must pay $57,129.00 to the division of Consumer Affairs who will in turn donate those funds to legitimate registered non-profit horse rescues. They will also have to pay $23,299.00 in investigation costs.

If Crumb or Wikoff fail to pay the total sum within 5 years, they will be ordered to pay civil penalties in the amount of $500,625.00.

Crumb and Wikoff were the trustees and founders of NJ Horse Angels that took in over 145.000 in donations on Facebook in just 7 months in 2010. Other Facebook rescue names used by Crumb were NJ Horse Angels Rescue, NJ Killpen Horses, Horse Angels of Facebook, Camelot Auction Horse Angels, and The Forgotten Angels.

The final judgment also stipulates that Crumb and Wikoff must remove all web pages pertaining to their "rescues" and they can never be registered as a public charity in the state of New Jersey or ask the public for donations.

Donations were supposed to be used to purchase and care for horses at risk of selling to horse slaughter, but instead were used to finance personal jewelry, gambling trips, meals and cash for Crumbs son who is currently in prison.

Just one of Crumbs Facebook pages had over 4900 "friends" that she would beg for donations on a daily basis always using the words and phrases such as "bail" and "paypal money now to save this horse from slaughter." Only a small portion of the donated money went to any horses.

Before giving to any animal rescue, always ask for their non-profit registration number for the state they reside in, and if possible visit the rescue in person. If a rescue is not registered and refuses to give out detailed information on the animals in it's care - do not give them your donation.

Brenda Lewis, President of Another Chance Horse Rescue, states "because of cases like the NJ Horse Angels, donations for legitimate horse rescues are at an all time low, so even though she is no longer misappropriating funds, she is still impacting the horses." Please do let not Crumb win and let the horses suffer, give to legitimate horse rescues.
