Super Bowl 2014 will be played at the new Meadowlands Stadium in the state of New Jersey. Politicians in the Garden State are making sure you don't think Super Bowl XLVIII is happening in some other state.
NBC New York and several other sources are reporting that New Jersey governor Chris Christie is a bit miffed about news outlets reporting that the NFL awarded Super Bowl 2014 to New York City. Despite the fact that the Giants and Jets have "New York" in both team names, games hosted by both football teams are played at a football stadium in the state of New Jersey. Governor Christie, never one to keep to himself, was quoted as saying "I'm looking out that door, and it's New Jersey, and I look where that stadium is, and it's New Jersey, and when everybody gets on the train or in their cars or on buses, they're going to be coming to that game in New Jersey."
Joining Governor Christie in the fight for Jersey respect is Senator Frank Lautenburg. According to NBC New York, Senator Lautenburg has sent a letter to the NFL regarding Super Bowl 2014 coverage. The point of this letter, NBC New York reports, is to "to ensure that the NFL appropriately describes the site of the game as 'New Jersey/New York' and not simply 'New York."
As a current resident of the great state of New Jersey, I can understand the frustration felt by many in the area. Nevertheless, let's not kid ourselves. People from all around the country and world won't be walking around Newark on Super Bowl Saturday. They're coming to see the Big Apple, Manhattan, New York City. Yes, I'm sure you'll get some runoff of Super Bowl visitors traveling to New Jersey towns (I'm looking at you, Hoboken). There are two main attractions that will bring people to New Jersey in February 2014. The Super Bowl and New York City.
