I think that cell phones should be restricted while on highways and such, but what is so wrong with chatting on the phone while driving down the street to run a quick errand? Sure it's a distraction, but what are they going to do, ban any and everything that's a distraction to a driver? What's next? You're banned from talking to anyone in your car if you're behind the wheel? No music? Music can be a distraction if you really get into it. Are they going to take all mirrors out of the inside of your car so you don't get distracted looking at yourself while at a red light?
My point is they can't prevent an accident by preventing anything that could be a distraction. I do agree that some drivers, namely those whom have only been driving for a few months. Those who are a little more easily distracted than others ( kids under 18) should have restrictions, but others should be allowed to make the decision for themselves. The government should leave it to the individual instead of trying to foresee an accident that hasn't even happened yet. You could get into an accident just as easily if you are distracted by the passengers in the car with you. You could just as easily run into a pole if are distracted with fiddling with radio trying to find your favorite station. If you are eating a cheese burger with one hand and have only one hand on the wheel, you suddenly have to swerve to avoid hitting a person walking across the street, that cheese burger is going to get in your way causing you to hit someone because you weren't able to swerve enough to miss. Do you see my point? Anything could cause you to get into an accident pf some sort, that doesn't mean that the law should ban it because it could cause an accident.

Post a CommentVery good point and as I drive more and gain more experience, I am better able to understand your point. Thanks for the feedback.
Obviously you've never been broadsided by someone who was just chatting on the phone while running a quick errand and didn't notice a red light or a car with the right of way at an intersection. I represent the wireless industry and our own studies as well as CDC and Transportation Safety studies reveal seriously slowed reaction times by drivers talking on cell phones (slightly improved by 'hands free'). I never answer my phone in the car and pull over if I need to make a call. Driving requires your FULL attention and cell phones are a significant enough distraction that they have driven up accident rates. Reaction times of 16-25 year olds have been shown to slow to that of 85 year olds when distracted by a cell phone! When people won't exercise common sense, for public health and safety, government must step in - and it has with regard to cell phone and text use while driving.
