No Chicken Dance Dad! - a Teenage Daughter's Embarrasing Moment

Gayle Crabtree
The day my teenage daughter embarrassed my husband backfired on her in a big way.

Because my younger daughter had some health issues my husband and I chaperoned band trips as much as possible. She didn't always appreciate our efforts but there is one moment that will go down in history. It wasn't as much that we embarrassed her but that the captured video was then put on You Tube for the entire world to see.

It was Christmas 2007. For her senior year of high school the band chose to go to Dollywood for the annual trip. My daughter begged for space. Hubby and I decided to go to be in the park without actually chaperoning. We reasoned that if she needed anything she could call and we would be right there. The school band staff had a less than flawless track record when dealing with medical issues. We felt this was the best solution.

Dollywood has several places to eat. At dinnertime, Hubby and I decided to try the Chicken Palace. It was crowded but fun. A character named "Granny" walks around in costume to sing and delight the customers. You never know what this walking comedy is going to do or say - which is part of the fun of dining there!

The embarrassing moment happened just after we sat down.

Granny was making her rounds. She was calling to people on her microphone and making general fun comments. The packed holiday crowd that filled the house was in a good mood. At about the exact moment she got to our table my husband's cell phone rang. It was our daughter. Granny was on the moment in a flash.

"Oh a cell phone. I just love cell phones. Can I talk?" She asked my husband over the microphone.

He shrugged and handed her the phone. She talked to my daughter for a minute. Over the microphone the whole restaurant heard her identify herself. She asked if my daughter was having a good time. She must have said yes. Granny said "Well good! Guess what. We have a surprise for you." This was followed by "Your daddy is going to do the Chicken Dance right here in our restaurant!" Then she handed me the phone.

My daughter asked if this was for real. I assured her that it was. Hubby meanwhile, being the good guy that he is got up from the table.

In the phone my daughter begged me to not let him do it. She said it could cause her to be in therapy the rest of her life.

Granny put the funny hat on my husband's head and started to play the banjo.

In the phone my daughter said that she could not believe my husband would do this.

I grabbed my digital camera to capture the moment. Page views will go toward my daughter's therapy fund. (Unless we use them to visit Dollywood again first!)
