No Gifts for Valentine

Shirley Adkins
I stood outside her door

And listened for a moment,

Surrounded by her friends,

Laughing and quiet giggling

As teenagers sometimes do,

Sharing secrets and dreams

Of the perfect Valentine gifts

From the boys of their dreams.

It brought back memories

Of our first Valentine's Day.

In my head were thoughts of

Flowers, candy and cards.

Laughter bubbled over

As I thought of the words

You said to me that day,

"We don't need those things

Only one special day a year,

So I chose to give you nothing

But a promise from my heart,

To give you all my true love

All the other days of the year"

Now it's 16 years later,

The promise you have kept.

On Valentine's Day,

You've never given me

Roses, candy or cards,

But you fill my life with

Love, laughter and joy

Each and every day

Throughout the year.

Happy Valentine's Day!!
