No Longer Over the Hill - Brett Favre Proves Everyone Wrong Again
Fast forward two years and you'll find that Brett Favre is still the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. Aaron Rogers has been almost forgotten, and the talk of Favre's retirement has all but disappeared. Farve's play on the football field has seen resurgence. Brett has shown that he can still play effectively in the NFL by leading the Packers to a 2-0 record for the first time since 2001.
Even though Favre's quarterback rating is only 84.0, he continues to find ways to help his team win. The Packers have won six straight regular season games going back to last season. In addition to the team success that Favre has had, he continues to re-write the record books in every game that he plays. Favre passed John Always as the all-time winningest quarterback in NFL history with his 149th career win as a starter. Favre is only four touchdown passes away from Dan Marino's all-time mark of 420, and has an outside shot at Marino's all-time yardage record of 61,361 yards. Favre also continues to extend his games started streak which is currently at 237 straight regular season games.
Not all of Favre's records are positive. George Blanda's 277 career interceptions is a virtual certainty at only two picks away. Regardless, it takes a NFL player with supreme longevity to get close to even a dubious record like Blanda's.
Once again, Brett Favre has given Cheeseheads hope for the future. Maybe for a little while talk of Brett Favre's play will overpower the talk of his retirement. Call me sentimental, but I have never been one to quickly write off an aging star after a poor season or two. I think a player like Brett Favre has the right to stick around as long as he wants.
Only time will tell how long Brett Favre continues to play football. As long as he keeps leading the Greenbay Packers to victory, he is right where he belongs.
