While it has been under development for well over a decade, Duke Nukem Forever was originally announced in 1997, followed by a scattering of promotional materials released at E3 and other outlets throughout the following years. During this time, the forthcoming and long expected title won a few vaporware (a form of software that doesn't exist) awards, as development teams were shuffled and eventually terminated. Although work on the game didn't continue for some time, the project was reportedly never canceled but simply placed in limbo.
Speculation for the game's eventual arrival continued as a result of the sporadic promotional behavior that occurred throughout a decade, while the publishing rights to it changed hands, further complicating matters. Now with all of the turmoil in the past and behind the game's new presence, 2K Games has announced and confirmed a May 3rd release date in North America, and May 6th worldwide.
So what can gamers expect to experience after such a long wait? Well, for starters, 2K Games Official press release is titled "Duke Nukem Set to Kick Ass and Chew Bubblegum starting May 3rd, 2011." Such a statement not only actually confirms the tile, (confirmed pre-orders from Amazon.com available on the same webpage as well), but players can expect to see the same old arrogant Duke who hasn't changed very much as well. As with prior versions , the game itself plays as a first person shooter, with gamers taking control of Duke in effort to once again save the Earth.
Built upon a variation of the Unreal Engine 2, the game takes on a much different look than its predecessors. With a decade of enhancements in all aspects of computer technology, gamers can expect to find a modern shooter and a Duke Nukem like no other.
Duke Nukem Forever will be available for Microsoft Windows based PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 systems. It is developed by Gearbox Software , and is the sequel to the 1996 game Duke Nukem 3D .
