"No more yanky my wanky. The Donger need food!" I exclaimed to my 16 year old niece Emma. Her blank stare at my Sixteen Candles reference alerted me to a couple of very disturbing facts: One; it has been over two decades since Producer/Director John Hughes infamous eighties icon movie was released and two; I am... old. Or at least I am ages away from that world of leg warmers, Tears for Fears posters, and of course, beloved eighties movies. Once I got past the fact that Emma and her adolescent cohorts have had limited if not bleak exposure to movies of the eighties era, I began to marinate in the memories of my own years of teen angst so eloquently portrayed by Molly Wringwald in Sixteen Candles. Like moth to the flame, I was instantly sucked into Wringwald's awkward teen character Samantha. From her embarrassing family debacles, to her poor self image, had I have had red hair, I could have been her. Samantha isn't the only identifiable or memorable character in Sixteen Candles. Who could ever forget Long Duck Dong (my quote that left niece Emma mystified). Even if one did not have the pleasure of hosting a good natured, but insane foreign exchange student during their high school years, they rarely could avoid a mega crush on a "Jake Ryan" type, nor could many of us deny the treacherous love struck stalking of the annoying nerd. And who better to represent the nerd, than king of eighties geeks Anthony Michael Hall, or "Ted" as he was called in Sixteen Candles. Sixteen Candles is timeless and enjoyable. It's a must see for every generation.
