No-Mow Grass, Low Maintenance, Easy on the Environment and Looks Great

Saturday is here and you would really like to head out to the lake for the weekend. But, there are chores to do, and topping the list is the dreaded 'mow yard.' It's been a busy week, probably 6 or 7 days since you last mowed and the grass is tall. Might even need to mow twice. You put gas in the mower, but it won't start. Time for a tune-up. New plug, new oil, and your good to go. Finally, with the mower ready, you grab many large lawn/garden bags for the clippings and off you go. Mow, mow, mow, empty bag. Repeat, again and again. Several hours later, the lawn looks great, your hands and shoes are green and you have huge pile of lawn clippings. So, off to the dump you and your grass clippings go. Chores done, you're dirty, sweaty and tired and Saturday is half over. You decide it isn't worth going to the lake this late after all.

If this sounds familiar, you might be interested to know that due to some recent scientific meddling with your common lawn there is something called 'No-Mow Grass.' (Apparently genetic scientists don't like mowing either) No-Mow grass is an alternative to the traditional fast growing lawn. It only grows to a height of 3 to 6 inches, and grows well in most climates. You can put off mowing, not only for weeks at a time, but even a month or two or three or more.

The No-Mow, or sometimes called Low-Mow, Grass can be found at many lawn and garden stores in both rolls and bagged seed form. It is also available online. Pricewise it runs about the same cost as a traditional lawn (in the bagged form) but will cost less to maintain. No-Mow grass has been used on many landscape and yard remodel programs on television.

The advantages of a No-Mow grass lawn are many. The big payout is you have a rich green yard that requires little of your time to maintain. It grows very slowly and doesn't grow tall. The No-Mow grass has a natural relaxed laid over look, resembling a natural meadow.

The No-Mow Grass is easy on the environment, requiring less water and fertilizer than a traditional lawn. It can benefit from occasional weed and feeding. Using the lawnmower less often saves you money spent on gas and oil, and puts out fewer emissions. You also no longer have to worry about your many bags of lawn clippings - every weekend.

No-Mow grass is a great, environmentally friendly option for homeowners who might not be physically able to regularly mow, or for your second or seasonal home. Some homeowners use it between stepping stones, or as steps in a slanting yard.

You may be wondering why the No-Mow Grass only grows 3 to 6 inches. Recently a plant hormone called Brassinosteroid has been discovered and altered in grass. Brassinosteroid is responsible for the growth and aging of plants. By altering this hormone, a low maintenance, dwarfed version of grass has been created. This process has amazing implications for harvestable crops. For now, we have more eco-friendly, low maintenance, attractive option for grass lawns.
