Keys said that this song is about relationships and how nobody can get in the way of true love. The song was released first to her website and fan club in August 2007. It was officially released on September 10, 2007, about two weeks after its radio premiere. This song has been used in the trailer for 27 Dresses and for a preview of the show Ugly Betty. Felicia Barton also sang this song during an episode of American Idol.
The music video premiered on BET on September 24, 2007. It did reach the top spot, as well as reaching the top spot on Yahoo! Music, TRL, and VH1. The music video was directed by Justin Francis. The video consists of four settings. The first setting shows Keys lying on a chain in an empty room. The second setting is a room that is decorated with musical instruments and Keys sings on the keyboard. The third setting is outside in the rain. The forth setting shows Keys in a blue-lit nightclub. The video concludes showing the four settings in one frame, with Keys returning to the first setting. The video has had over eighty million views on YouTube alone.
The majority of the chart success Keys got from this song came in 2007. It did reach the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and Pop 100. It also placed twenty-second on the U.S. Billboard Hot Latin Songs and seventeenth on Smooth Jazz Songs. The only other countries it placed first on were Hungry, Switzerland, and Mexico. However, it did place in the top three in many other countries, including Australia, Austria, Canada, Europe, Germany, Portugal, Turkey, Italy, and New Zealand. It also placed as high as sixth on the United Kingdom Singles Chart, seventh on the Danish Chart, fifth on the Swedish Chart, eighth on the Irish Singles Chart, and twelfth on the Romanian Top 100.
