No Respect for the Holidays

It reminded me of the fights that broke out in department stores all over the country back in the 80's with the cabbage Patch Doll craze. A local woman had hit another woman over an Elmo Live doll here in Birmingham. Apparently it was the last one on the shelf, and by God, she was going to buy it - even fight for it.

Not too far away, a few live trees were stolen from a parking lot where an elderly couple had been selling live Christmas trees. "Happy Birthday, Jesus, I'm stealing a Christmas tree to dress and celebrate the season of your birth with." I wonder if they put a star on top of the stolen tree in remembrance of the star that the wise men and shepherds followed to their Lord's manger.

Then there was the story about someone dressing up as Santa Claus in order to lower suspiciousness over him gaining access to his ex-wife's home. I believe he then shot someone. Of course, Santa isn't a religious icon.

But the thing is, people do not seem to have even the slightest respect for one another any longer. Yes, I know that crime is rampant year round and that it really doesn't matter what a guy dresses like when he takes another person's life. But at Christmas time? Doesn't that seem blasphemous almost?

Hey Cass, That is intended to be a rhetorical question, right? Overall, our bloated, self-centered, society doesn't celebrate the birth and life of their chosen Deity, but rather spend the holidays focusing on what's in it for themselves. We are a society above self-sacrifice, giving and compassion for our fellow man. Ironic, isn't it? Just my take on things.
