Surviving Our First Major Road Trip

We all know that road trips can be hit or miss when traveling with little ones. It's much easier when they sleep most of the way, but as they get older, they tend to sleep less and less. Our first major road trip was taken just last year, when we loaded up the car, hit I-95, and headed to Myrtle Beach. Before the beach trip, the extent of our road trips were about 5 hours or less. You wouldn't think that three hours could make that much difference but boy were we wrong. Ah, the joys of motherhood!

We made sure we took as many as necessary potty breaks along the way and stopped at a few places to grab a quick bite to eat. We thought we brought all the comforts of home: Ipod for movies and TV shows, books to read, pages to color, and snacks to eat on the way there. I guess all of the above-mentioned items killed about forty minutes total. Then came the dreaded, "How much longer until we're there?" "I'm bored.", "Couldn't we just fly, we would be at Disney World by now if we were flying." This list goes on and on. Actually coming back up the road was not as bad because our little one knew that we would be stopping by her grandparents' house and it broke up the drive.

Somehow or another we survived and plan on making another road trip this summer. We're going to conquer the Florida road trip this time. As you can see, we have this parenting thing down pat, either that or we are just gluttons for punishment.

Has anyone actually counted the number of times that their child has asked, "Are we there yet?" while on a road trip?

I don't think we would survive without our minivan's DVD player. I tell you, despite the expense involved in buying it, it has made our road trips more enjoyable. There's a lot less whining and screaming going on in the back seat!
