Materials:
Cotton fabric large enough to make the size tablecloth needed to fit your table and 6 to 8 (12" napkins)
applique fabric
paper backed fusible webbing sheets
fusible webbing tape
any embellishments you like(optional)
Directions:
The first step is to wash and dry the fabric. Next iron the fabric so that it lays flat and smooth. After you have determined the size and shape of the no sew tablecloth you will need, use those dimensions to cut the fabric to those measurements ( be sure to take into account the 1/2" seam around the edge). Next you will need to cut out the napkins into 14" squares.
Now you are ready to begin adding the hem to the no sew tablecloth. Press under 1/4 inch of the fabric along edges of the tablecloth with the fabric facing, the wrong side up. Lay the tape with the paper side facing up, along pressed edges of fabric. Now lightly iron across the paper for a few seconds. Do not remove the paper backing, just yet. Turn the pressed edge over another 1/4 inch and press in place. Now unfold the pressed edge and remove the paper backing. Next refold and fuse the fabric together with the iron. Follow this same procedure to hem the edge of the no sew napkins.
Now you are ready to add your appliques to your no sew tablecloth. First of all you will need to come up with a design or motif. You can add flowers, fruits, leaves etc. If you are creating a set for a specific holiday, you can make appliques suitable for those occasions. First you will need to fuse (iron on) sheets of the paper backed webbing with the paper side up, onto the wrong side of the applique fabric. Allow to cool. Cut out your designs or motif and remove the paper backing. Now you can arrange the appliques onto the no sew tablecloth in your desired pattern and fuse them in place. Follow the previous directions to add a matching applique to each of the no sew napkins.
If you would like to make your no sew tablecloth and no sew napkins a little fancier, you can choose to add beads or fringe to the edges. If the tablecloth is square or oblong you can just add a few embellishments to the corners, like bows or beads etc. Be as creative or as decorative as you like. Now sit back and enjoy your new handmade linens!
