No Stimulus Petition: What!?!?

Various No Stimulus Petitions Circulating Online

Justin Time
Along with many Americans, I tuned into the President Obama's press conference last night. Despite being asked about Alex Rodriguez's steroid use, Obama's press conference was primarily concerned with discussing the necessity and intent behind the economic stimulus package that was recently passed in the Senate and is now on its way to House-Senate negotiations. I think the intent and need behind such a package was pretty clear.

After hearing about double digit inflation in two US cities, namely Elkhart, IN and Fort Myers, FL and knowing for a fact that many state and local governments are close to laying off government employees, and that some local food banks are even running out of food, this no stimulus petition that has been being circulated recently seems absolutely absurd.

Various emails and links have circulated over the past week, apparently urging President Obama to rescind any economic stimulus package lest it create an undue tax burden for future generations. The no stimulus petition I received via email had claimed that the economic stimulus would benefit illegal immigrants, which is the result of misconstruing some fallout that happened with last year's economic stimulus package. That is, the economic stimulus package currently in House-Senate negotiations would give no direct benefit to those without social security numbers.

The other no stimulus petition that has been circulating contends that the stimulus is unwarranted because of the future tax burden it creates. While that argument might at least have some merit, I find it absurd that hundreds of thousands of people want to actively try to destroy the only help in sight during this time of economic crisis. Who are the people that are willing to sign a no stimulus petition? They're either trust fund babies or have lost their minds. If the majority of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, what happens when they lose their paycheck? Everything else in their lives is lost as well, crashing like a house of cards.

A week or so ago, the NC governor, Bev Perdue, instructed state agency leaders to prepare lay off plans "just in case" they were needed. Many other states are doing the same thing or have already done it. That's right, government jobs are now going to the way side too, following the 598,000 jobs that were lost just this past January.

With over half a million jobs going this past month and government jobs starting to slip, who in their right mind would want to put a stop to the only relief in sight by signing a no stimulus petition?

Just because a stimulus is needed doesn't mean that THIS stimulus is needed. I think the government should act but I also think it is going about this all wrong.

    I hear ya!

Trying to cure poverty with government is like trying to sober up by chugging a 40-ounce bottle of absinthe. If you don't believe that is the case, give it about a year or so, and most of you will.

If you wanna dance, you gotta pay the fiddler. Who's going to foot the bill? The taxpayers, of course. I don't think big government stepping in like this is going to solve anything. Yes, give aid to the unemployed. All of us could be there. But I'd rather ride the storm out than see big government just dig a deeper hole.

Government agencies and programs do not stimulate the economy nor do they create jobs for the masses. Creating jobs for the labor unions to get rich off of only further destroy the economy. Just look at the auto makers. When is the last time you found an article of clothing (or anything else for that matter) made in the U.S.A.? If you read the actual spending spree, I mean bill, and read between the lines, you'll find that it's mostly about liberal pet projects. Tell me, how does spending $100 million teaching 10-year olds about "green construction" stimulate the economy and create jobs NOW? Ask the people at GE, Harley Davidson, and the countless other corporations that have been laid off how that's going to help them. They say history never repeats. Well, it's about to. FDR's spend and tax plan kept us in the Depression years longer than necessary. Just recently, Japan tried to spend their way out of a recession and it only destroyed their economy. Obama got that one wrong. Guess his

I guess I should include that I read the entire 778 pages of the Senate's compromised version of the plan that was released on the 7th I believe. And, state workers are being laid off here in Pennsylvania, too.

    Great job, Justin, as always.

I read a few of the anti-stimulus sites myself. The only merit is the future tax burden, but for the love of not starving to death we have to think of NOW. I do not agree with some of the proposed funds going to certain agencies, and I feel some agencies were left out that should not have been, but that is politics for ya. There is no way that the citizens of the United States would let the government get away with not doing something to help. At least this package is for government programs, agencies, and people: Not for failed business and CEO's.

I asked myself the very same thing.
