No New Year's Resolutions

No Huge List This Year

Peter Stone
My New Year's resolution this year is not to make any resolutions. Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary was good enough to come with a lengthy definition for resolution: 1: the act or process of resolving (Are you suppose to use the word or any form of the word in the definition?): as a: the act of analyzing a complex notion into simpler ones (That's hard to do sometimes.) b: the act of answering: solving c: the act of determining. December is that time of year when we feel the importance of New Year's Resolutions. We all know and have heard about a million times the importance of goal setting.

My New Year's resolution this year is not to make any resolutions. A New Year's Resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or making lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as beneficial. I propose this year not to make any New Year's Resolutions. I am going to accomplish that is five easy steps.

1. No setting rigid goals for myself that I have to revise on a weekly and daily basis because they are unrealistic. I am not setting myself up this year for failure. Making enormous goals, spanning six months or more. A lot can happen in six months to a year. I could get a new job. I could move to another state. I could change work schedule.

2. No fitting in fitness. Now that's a big one every year that goes on the top of a list. It's usually the list posted on the refrigerator. I get to see it every time I go for a snack. Why is the list there? I am not going to exercise standing in front of the fridge looking for leftovers. No fitness list on the fridge. I may take the dog for longer walks.

3. The one of the big ones I had last year was a 20 pounds weight loss by July 4th. I wouldn't feel guilty eating over the holidays. All the cookouts and parties. Right, that's always a good one. I know you can empathize. Weight loss before vacation to look good in the bathing suit. Not doing that this year. I'll lose two pounds after New Year's, and see what happens after that.

4. Ooooo, get organize is a biggie. I got up early before my parents or the Kids trying to undo some of the damage Santa did to our house. Looks like Kids R Us threw up in here! Who can help me reduce the clutter in your life and find peace in your home? I ask that question every year, and then Christmas happens. I'll drink a cup of coffee first. Still looks like Kids R Us threw up in here!

5. Do random acts of kindness. Maybe I'll keep this one. This I can do. Maybe I can donate the furniture, clothing and other household items that I no longer need, rather than leaving them out by the curb to fill up our landfills. I can burn some calories and get rid of the clutter. The house will be better organized. I may lose those two pounds. The lifting counts as fitness. That'll work.
