Noise Machines: Sound Machines for Sleep and Quiet

Deep dark circles under your eyes... Restlessness... Inability to focus on tasks at hand... Are these too familiar to you? For me, yes! Mostly everybody suffers from these effects of insomnia or sleeplessness at some point, and it may lead to a serious situation: stress!

Many people do suffer insomnia and have tried various suggestions in order to cope with this problem. Some have even sought medical resolution through taking sleeping pills and other similar sleep-inducing medications. However, the problem with this solution is the possibility of being dependent on these drugs which would further aggravate the person's situation.

Prescription or over-the-counter sleep medications may not be necessary, since there are natural sleeping remedies which have worked for many people. So why take the risk of drug dependency when you have a better alternative with less risk?

Some of these natural sleep remedies are:

Taking melatonin, a natural hormone produced by the body which is a powerful antioxidant

Learning relaxation techniques will reduce stress

The use of noise machines : these are electronic equipment that emit white noise. However, this type of noise is not distracting and unpleasant to our ears.

White noise machines use a combination of many different sounds which effectively mask background noise. These sounds are similar to the pleasing natural sounds in the environment like the soft sound of rain or the slapping waves by the shore which are relaxing to the mind and increase concentration.

The idea of using a noise machine is not to make the room quiet. Rather, it conceals other sounds into one which is unintelligible to our ears. The human brain usually tries to associate things with what we hear to some reactions. So for example, if you hear your pet dog whine on the floor, your brain may remind you that you have to buy dog food. In other words, your brain may shift to active gear and will keep you awake.

On the other hand, if you hear relaxing sounds from nature like the rain or waterfalls, even if it's artificially coming from noise machines, you should get the feeling of being relaxed. The fact that you could not associate it concretely to your daily life further relaxes your mind and helps you fall asleep easily. By combining these noise machines with a comfortable bed and a dimly lit room, you'll be having a more restful sleep night after night.
