For those looking to experience the perks of owning a upper end smartphone without the 'upper end' bill, the E63-2 comes in at just short of $300 (though it can be found for around $200)- a nice descent from unlocked phones with similar features. Before I go on, let me not set a false precedent. The E63-2 is not a miracle worker. Almost cutting the price in half wasn't the only choice Nokia made with the phone. You will find plenty of features otherwise hard to obtain on similarly priced phones, but it certainly won't set a new benchmark for the tech.
For those looking for a first time cell phone without an interest in special features- the Nokia E63-2 is not for you. The product is aimed squarely at those lusting for the robust features of upper phones without the necessary cash to pick up one. If you're looking for an inexpensive phone that doesn't come anywhere near a $100 with maybe text messaging and a camera- you're paying for a lot you probably won't want with the E63-2. For those that fall under the target audience, you could do much worse than it.
The phone fits comfortably in your hand and the keypad is one of the better one's I've encountered in the price range. The keys could be a bit larger but they fortunately don't have that annoying 'click' effect that sometimes plagues these phones. The 'click' effect I describe is the quirk of some keypads that feel and sound like they've been pressed- when actually they haven't. Also worth mentioning is the classy look of the phone- no matter what color you get.
Image-conscious consumers shouldn't worry about pulling out the phone in public. Nokia did a good job giving the E63-2 (Unlocked) the look of a sharp, trendy phone. It comes across not as a budget 'corners cut' smartphone, but a genuinely attractive little piece of tech. It doesn't appear to be the most indestructible phone, but it doesn't feel like it'll break after a few accidents.
The intuitive keypad works great in cooperation with the phone's full e-mail capabilities. You can fire off texts and e-mails with relative ease for those that care about that sort of thing. The micro USB port is a comfortable side spot as opposed to the awkward bottom usually chosen by manufacturers. Likewise, the microSD card slot is in a comfortable area along the side.
A pair of strange omissions will annoy some consumers. Rather than offer an external volume control, the phone forces you to internally adjust volume. Due to this abnormality, you're best off finding a suitable volume level and sticking with it. The other omission is dedicated GPS support. While the volume issue can be an annoyance, this GPS fault is forgivable considering the reflection in price. Everything else, from the 3G support, Wi-fi, internal camera, and Bluetooth support is satisfactory for the Nokia E63-2 (Unlocked) smartphone.
