Some of the first cards I ever started saving were right after I first left home. Anything written from my family helped chase away the homesickness. But it was just the other day that I really noticed how much the message can affect a person. My daughter received a belated birthday present from her great-grandmother; when she opened the box, she carefully set the wrapped present aside and opened the card. She read every single line in that card, showed it to me, and said, "I love keeping Gramma's cards. She always writes nice things to me."
What I came to find out was that there is a whole pile of birthday, Christmas, and Valentine's day cards from that one person in my daughter's bookshelf. The only difference between those cards and any of the others she's received is that Gramma writes inside them words that are touching and meaningful to my daughter.
So whether you've spent hours finding the right gift or are eagerly opening up a special box of Christmas cards, all the thought you've put into things can make it really hard to find the right words. Here's some help.

Here's the general rule to follow: cards being sent locally or nationally should be in the mail by December 15th. Cards mailed internationally should be in the mail by December 1st.
