Non-Shedding Dogs

Breeds and Facts

Non-shedding dogs (hypoallergenic) are gaining popularity among animal lovers everywhere, due to the fact they are compatible companions for allergy sufferers. These hypoallergenic dog breeds don't cause the usual sneezing and itchy eyes that the other dog breeds are known to cause in people allergic to pet dander. According to the American Kennel Club, there are no 100% hypoallergenic dog breeds. However, the few dogs classified as being hypoallergenic have shown to decrease the allergy symptoms in people with pet dander sensitivities. The reason behind the decreased sensitivity to pet dander is due to the non-shedding dogs' lack of a full undercoat.

Portuguese Water Dog
Over the past ten years, the popularity of the Portuguese Water Dog has been increased by 44% due to its lack of shedding (American Kennel Club). The Portuguese Water Dogs are often an ideal breed for those with pet dander sensitivities because they are single-coated breeds of non-shedding dogs. While the Portuguese Water Dog is a great choice for people with mild pet allergies, it's not recommended for asthma suffers because it can still produce a reaction (Portuguese Water Dog Club of America). These dogs may not make suitable pets for families with small children because they do like to play rough.

Chinese Crested Dog
Chinese Crested dogs are also classified as non-shedding dogs. The American Kennel Club has stated the popularity of this breed has increased by as much as 28% over the past 10 years due to its lack of shedding. Because of the Chinese Crested dog's unusual appearance, it has only gradually begun to become a common name as a hypoallergenic pet. These dogs are almost bald with spotted skin and puffs of hair on the head. Despite this dog's odd appearance it makes a great family pet.

Bedlington Terrier
The Bedlington Terrier is another dog that has also increased in popularity over the past 10 years. The American Kennel Club states the popularity of this dog has increased by 28% in only a decade. Although it resembles a lamb, the amount of shedding this dog produces is minimal. This terrier is an excellent companion choice among allergy sufferers.

Standard Schnauzer
According to the American Kennel Club, the Standard Schnauzer has gained popularity as well over the past 10 years due to its lack of pet dander. These dogs can most often be found with a salt and pepper coat or even a solid black coat. Although these are great dogs for allergy sufferers, their coat does require frequent grooming to keep it clean and tangle free.

Because no dog, even non-shedding dogs, are 100% hypoallergenic, it's important you choose wisely before making the commitment to bring home a pet. If you have a few breeds in mind, spend time with the breeds prior to making a decision to see how you react with them. In some cases, even the most minimal of pet dander can still cause allergy symptoms. Before you make a choice, you will also want to do your research on the breed to make sure the pet is suitable for your family and lifestyle.
