What are your favorite colors? You do not have to stick to traditional Christmas colors when decorating your tree. You can also mix and match colors to create a stunning effect or reflect your personal taste or passions. If you have a family of sports enthusiasts, decorate your tree in the colors of your favorite sports teams. Use your favorite color in varying shades. A monochromatic tree in shades of blue can still create depth and elegance.
Hobbies and Collectibles
Surrounding yourself with things you enjoy is always a great way to start decorating. If you don't like something, don't put it up, and this includes on your Christmas tree. Choose one or two things that you already enjoy collecting and incorporate this into your tree. They can be the focal point, or a subtle accent to traditional decorations. Are you interested in aircraft? Find ornaments related to the aviation field. Are pets a priority in your life? There are ornaments available for virtually every type of animal. Are you an avid knitter? Tuck some brightly colored knitting needles in the branches and create small balls of yarn that can hang as ornaments.
Think Outside the Box
We've all heard this tired cliché, but it can be a great idea when it comes to tree decorating. You do not have to use traditional ornaments on your tree at all. At one open house, a tree in a bathroom was decorated with disposable razors, trial size bars of soap, small bottles of lotion and other toiletries. It was the perfect decoration for this tree and a wonderful conversation piece. Another tree was decorated in nothing but Christmas gift bags. Chances are you already have these in your home. Raid your stash and create an interesting tree for very little money.
Shop Non-Traditional Stores
Christmas stores may be normally be your first stop to find ideas, but you can find unusual ornaments and inspirations in unexpected places. Visit your local dollar store for ornaments, figurines, or some items for those non-traditional ornaments. Craft stores normally carry a variety of ornaments, and are many times grouped by theme or color.
Have fun with your decorations and let it reflect your own personality rather than what you think you should create. You will enjoy looking at your tree and your friends and family will be intrigued by your choices.
