Women have gone to great lengths to penetrate the tight (and sometimes inscrutable) ranks of predominantly male careers. They've successfully attained careers as police officers, fire fighters, doctors, soldiers, construction workers and politicians, but where does this leave the men? Comparatively speaking, men are behind in breaking the stereotypical bonds of non-traditional careers and it's time we stepped up to the plate.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, a non-traditional career is one in which less than twenty-five percent of the workers are of a particular gender. They claim that men can take advantage of this situation just as women have because non-traditional male jobs are routinely recruiting men to even out the ratio. If you are looking to break the mold, here are a few non-traditional jobs for men.

Non-Traditional Jobs for Men: Nurse
According to the American Nurses Association, only five percent of nurses in the U.S. are male, which leaves quite a bit to be desired. A survey conducted by the AMH (American Mobile Healthcare) concludes that more than eighty percent of the male nurses in the industry would recommend this career to other men. If you're looking for a job that gives you satisfaction and also allows you to connect with people, consider nursing as a medical alternative to becoming a physician.

Non-Traditional Jobs for Men: Dental Assistant
Nearly ninety percent of all dental assistants are women, and that number would probably be higher if it weren't for the men who pursue this career in the military. Dental assistants schedule appointments, prep patients, assist dentists in the chair and perform administrative tasks. This particular job is fulfilling for many men because it provides a diverse array of duties that keep you interested and consistently learning.

Non-Traditional Jobs for Men: Librarian
The stereotypical librarian is a woman in her early fifties with bifocals that she wears on a chain around her neck. This doesn't have to be the case, however, as men find working in libraries to be fulfilling. The American Library Association claims that only eighteen percent of their members are male, and most of the men work in university libraries.

Non-Traditional Jobs for Men: Elementary School Teachers
Although men have taken great steps in penetrating the education industry, a startlingly high eighty-nine percent of elementary school teachers are women. It seems that men are drawn more to secondary education, particularly those jobs that also allow them to coach sports. The lowest percentage of male teachers fall in Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms.

Non-Traditional Jobs for Men: Receptionist
Although this particular job title is going the way of the Stereo 8, receptionists still exist and they predominantly women. Men are missing out, however, because receptionists have a crucial duty to their companies. They are the first face seen by customers and the most important liaison between clients and management.
