Non-Traditional Wedding Advice: Wise Words from a Latin Mother

niria pena
The Big day was here!! My family was at the Church making sure all the preparations were in order and the Reception Room was bright and wonderfully decorated. But my Mother was not with me. She was at the Church with the rest of the family. I wanted so badly to talked to her. We have been communicating, but only about flowers,
colors, gowns, theme, etc. But I needed that ultimate and final advice that all daughters expect from their mothers on their most perfect day. So the time came for me to leave for my Wedding (my Mother is still not in sight.)

I arrived about 30 minutes late (it's very common in Latin Weddings) but still, no Mom around. Then, after the vows were exchanged, the photos taken, the cake cut, the family goodbyes, the tossing of the bouquet, my Mother was not even near me. I finally caught sight of her, running in her beautiful Lame gown, giving orders to people. I said "so, Mom, is there anything you need to say to me before I go?" She took one look at me, no emotion reflected on her face and said "With the spoon you have chosen, with that you must eat." WHAT THE???!!! I was stunned at such advice and what does it mean?? I asked her again, and she repeated the same dumb advice. She added that my Grandmother gave her the same advice on her Wedding Day. What am I to do with this? Hurt, I left with my new husband, wondering what did it all mean.

After 37 years of marriage, 3 children, 2 grandchildren, I finally realized through all those years what it meant.
You marry for keeps. Just like you choose a spoon to drink your soup, and do not use many to do the same task.

Marriage is not dreamland, tulle, flowers and confetti. Marriage is hard work, sweat, tears, and sweet moments of remembrance.

And guess what happened when my two daughters got married? You guessed it! In the traditional and true Latin way, I spoke to my beautiful brides on their perfect day and gave them the advice that have rung through the generations of Latin women in my family. "WITH THE SPOON YOU HAVE CHOSEN, WITH THAT YOU MUST EAT."
