Non-Verbal Communication Misunderstandings

Guy Siverson
I try to take care of my car.

To that end I call my mechanic on a regular basis for tune-ups, oil changes, maintenance and other such things. There has been some trouble with receiving return calls in a timely fashion, but I like him and like his work so I persist.

It was time for me to get the car back into his shop, so I called. Several weeks went by and still no response. I called again when my car made a funny noise that I didn't like. Many more weeks went by and still no return call was received.

This has never been the case previously.

I concluded that he was done taking care of my car and this was his non-verbal way of communicating that. So I asked my bride to start looking for a new mechanic. Fortunately, communication was finally received and he took care of the car.

Come to find out, he had not been receiving any messages on his cell phone for a long period of time. Only recently had he discovered there was a problem, which he promptly got fixed. He was sending out a non-verbal communication without ever even knowing it. Actually, he wasn't, but it sure looked and felt like he was.

My point here is that non-verbal communication can easily be misunderstood. As such, relying only upon this form of communication within your interactions can be very unhealthy.
• The Email was not responded to because it was never received.• The door was not answered because everyone was out back.• The "to do" list was not done because the dog ate it.

This can also be readily seen within body language.
• Do the crossed arms mean a person is defensive or are they cold?• Does a brisk walk mean someone is confident or are they late?• Is a person biting their nails because they are nervous or are they tired and trying to stay awake?

I would suggest that every body posture has at least, if not more, two possible distinct meanings. Either it is a non-verbal communication or it is a bodily necessity for whatever reason as is the case with a person that is cooled crossing their arms.

Therefore, before you presume what a particular action probably means, it is always the wiser path to seek out further understanding of what a person is doing before making your own conclusions on a given matter.
