Can You Be Obese when You Are at a Normal Weight?

Doctors and doctor website can make researching a topic hard to understand. I've put together my research on this topic in lament terms for the common person.

What is normal weight obesity? This is a person with a normal BMI percentage with a high fat percentage. This puts them at risk for metabolic disturbances related to the heart.

BMI is body mass index. The way you calculate it is, your weight divided by your height gives you a percent of what body fat you have. This means that even those who are considered thin can have too much fat on their bodies. For example I am 5 feet 3 inches and 123lbs, when I calculated my BMI it said I had a 21.8 BMI which puts me in normal weight category.

People that have normal weight obesity are under the risk of having the following as well:

  • Altered blood lipid profile, Meaning a higher cholesterol level
  • High lipten- which is a hormone in your fat cells that will regulate your appetite
  • Higher rates of metabolic syndrome, which is a combination of medical disorders that increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Preventing Normal weight obesity

The best way to accomplish preventing normal weight obesity is by reducing overall body fat and increasing lean muscle. A person can do this by adding strength training exercises to your routine.

Strength training exercises include: Sit ups and push ups, using weight machines, free weights and resistance bands.

Like I said in the introductory statement, medical websites can be confusing, and use terms that are hard to understand or unfamiliar to the average person. Don't hesitate to look uncommon or unfamiliar words up in a dictionary to better understand what you are reading.

www.wikopedia.com

- is a great website for this.

www.google.com

-another great site to look up terms.

www.ask.com

- Great tool for researching.

FYI- Ask your doctor for brochures or pamphlets on this subject, they will be a great source of information, without a lot of research hassle.
