South Beach, in Miami's famous Art Deco district, has long been Miami's hot spot and main beach to people watch and be seen. But North Beach is fast becoming popular, due to the surge in development, and less crowded ocean spots that offer more family oriented atmosphere, shopping, and lodging.
Back in the 60's, North Beach was famous for the Beatles visiting and perfoming, along with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Jackie Gleason and many others that stayed in various Art Deco buildings, and at the famed Fountainbleu Hotel.
North Beach can be found between 63rd Street in south Miami Beach, down to the Town of Surfside heading north. The beach is easily accessible by walking and biking, and is a refreshing change from Miami Beach's social party scene.
There are many public recreational areas along North Beach, that are kid friendly and handicap accessible. People go to North Beach to strickly enjoy the sand and water, and this beach is by far one of south Florida's best. The sand quality all along the Atlantic is not too hard, yet it is soft enough to walk on, without too many rocks and shells if one chooses to go barefoot. Yet there are sections closer to the boardwalk to go shelling. The color of the sand has pink and beige tones to it, and sports enthusiasts can easily set up a volleyball net or toss a frisbee without losing their footing. The beach areas are lined by bicycle and walkways, so one is never bored, for people can easily take a walk on the boardwalk or go for a bicycle ride, if laying out under the golden sun or swimming is not on the agenda.
The water quality is fantastic, clear shades of aqua green, some of the best tropical water Florida has to offer. On a clear day the giant, puffy white clouds are low, and the sun glistens off the water, which is not overly hot, due to that part of Florida's tropical local and breezes. The water is always warm, and the waves are generally calm. One doesn't feel overwhelmed when at North Beach, for large waves are generally scarce, perfect for swimming, snorkeling or floating about. This is one of the calmest, most serene beaches!
North beach is located about 100 miles from Cuba, and the tropical water appeals to not only tourists, but locals as well. With the addition of luxury condominums, restaurants and shopping, North Beach may just be the next "it" place to be, but in the meantime, it is by far one of the best American beaches for true water sports, family friendly recreation and most importantly, relaxation.
