The grand Biltmore Estate and winery is one of the main focuses of Asheville, with its amazing gardens, castle-like house and exquisite winery. The house and gardens sit on 8000 acres, accessible by hiking, Segway or horseback from the main house. Audio tours are available and encouraged throughout America's largest home, packed with fascinating facts and details about George Vanderbilt, his descendents and the house itself. The Supervising Architect for the Biltmore also designed the 1900 Inn on Montford, with it's elegant English and American antiques dating from 1730-1910. All guestrooms have private bathrooms, king size beds and fireplaces. Coffee or tea is brought to your room at 8a.m. with a three-course breakfast served in the main house at 9a.m. A beautiful retreat, 1900 Inn on Montford is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A short walk from the gates of the Biltmore estate is the Biltmore Village Inn Bed and Breakfast. George Vanderbilt's lawyer Samuel Reed built this Queen Anne Victorian home in 1892. Originally built to overlook the village and the gates the Biltmore, trees have since blocked the view; however it still has spectacular views and is the closest Inn to the estate. All rooms have private bathrooms with whirlpool tubs and fireplaces. Afternoon tea is served daily. Herbs and vegetables from the gardens of the home are used in their full course breakfasts every morning. Biltmore Village Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places as an Asheville Landmark Building and is pleased to boast a triple diamond from AAA.
Beaufort House Victorian Bed and Breakfast is located just north of downtown Asheville in a historical, upscale neighborhood. Among it's credits, Beaufort House was once the home of Charlton Heston and his wife, Lydia. It has been photographed extensively for numerous publications, including in 1997 for the 'National Beauty and Bath Book'. All guestrooms come with their own personal character and have private bathrooms. Breakfast is served daily, including specialty coffees and teas.
For a true trip back in time, nothing can compare to one of a few remaining brick houses in Asheville that predate the Civil War. The Old Reynolds Mansion sits on Reynolds Mountain, surrounded by trees. Daniel Reynolds built the home in 1855 where he and his wife had 10 children together. The house was given a Colonial renovation in 1900 by one of Daniel's sons where he added a full third story, added on to the kitchen and putting in two story verandahs. The Reynolds family owned it until the 1970s when it was purchased by it's current owners, who restored what time had taken away. A lasting tribute to an era gone by, The Old Reynolds Mansion is perfect for a secluded getaway.
Asheville is a wonderful escape from today's hectic lifestyles. With many bed and breakfasts to chose from, these are just a sample of some of the more beautiful homes and those rich with history. Wherever you decide to stay, you will not be disappointed in the splendor that Asheville has to offer.
