North Carolina Ghost Stories Just in Time for Halloween

Legends and Ghost Stories of North Carolina

Randy Inman
First we have the Brown Mountain Lights. In the mountains of North Carolina, around Linville and nearby areas. Some strange lights appear from time to time. One of the popular stories for this is that it's an old slave looking for his master, carrying lanterns. I've also heard that it's a woman out searching for her lost lover, year after year. Scientists remain baffled at their true cause. What most scientists think is that it's some form of gas. But ask the old timers around Brown Mountain and they will tell ya their versions of what it is. There was even a song about the Brown Mountain Lights.

The Devil's Tramping Ground. In Chatham County, near Silver City. There is a path that is in the shape of a ring, 40 feet in diameter. Rumor has it that if you put something on the trail by day, it will be moved off during the night. The Devil is said to walk that trail at night, sweeping it clean of all debris. I have not seen this one myself but I heard a guy call into a radio show about a year ago, who said he lived a mile from it. He told the DJ's that the trail is overgrown and covered with litter now. I guess ole Satan is stomping around somewhere else these days.

Girl at the Bridge- This is in Greensboro North Carolina. At the Jamestown underpass of I-40. I have heard this one for years. It is said that on a certain night of the year a young girl in white will be hitchhiking there. She gets in the car and says she had an argument with her date and got out of his car. She asks to be taken home to the town of High Point. She gives directions to her house but will say nothing else, no matter what you say to her. Rumor has it one guy took her to a house and she disappeared. He knocked on the door and a man comes out and explains that it's the ghost of his daughter killed in a car wreck.

Maco Light- Near Wilmington North Carolina. The ghost of Joe Baldwin, who was killed by a train, is said to walk the railroad tracks with a lantern to warn people of trains coming. In 1889 President Grover Cleveland saw these mysterious lights. In 1977 that section of tracks were removed, and nobody has seen the lights since! My girlfriend saw these lights as a child and will probably never forget being spooked by them.

Mystery Hill- I am not talking about the one near Boone with the museum, though that place is cool. I'm talking about one near Denton and Lexington North Carolina. I'm sure residents of those towns would know how to find it. Legend says that a woman was killed on the hill while changing a tire, when the car jumped off the jack. Now if you park your car on the hill and put it in neutral the car will coast up the hill! Rumor has it that it's the lady's ghost pushing the car. I was there as a child and it really happens. I suspect it's an illusion and that the hill isn't real and your really going down hill. But it spooked me good as kid. I would love to know how to find that place again, if anybody knows, please message me with the info.
The Duke's House- Raleigh North Carolina. The house was built in the 1920's for a tobacco tycoon. In 1927 a car with 3 young women and a driver, ran off the Ashe Bridge and were killed within sight of the house. Rumor has it the 3 women can be seen on the Duke's porch waiting for him to answer the door. The driver can be seen walking the tracks looking for his severed head

These are just a few of the ones I heard of myself. In my research I saw many more and I may do a 2nd article on the subject very soon.
