Gem Mines in the State of North Carolina

My family and I enjoy going to public gem mines in North Carolina. Gem mining is a fun hobby and you can even sell some of the gemstones you find, on occasion. But I don't advise going to public North Carolina gem mines to try to make money, it is just clean fun. Well maybe not so clean as you do have to get a little dirty and wet to find any gemstones at the mines. In this article I will list some of my favorite public gem mines in North Carolina, which we have been to or heard of.

Castle McCullough is a gold mill that offers gold and gem panning in the piedmont area of North Carolina. Castle McCullough offers a place for classes of students to take a field trip and learn about gold or gem panning in North Carolina.

The Emerald Hollow Mine in Hiddenite North Carolina is my family's favorite public gem mine in North Carolina. The town of Hiddenite is even named after the gem found here at the mine. My daughter Monica enjoys the sluice mining here at Emerald Hollow. The sluice is where you wash off dirt from a bucket to see what you have found in the way of gem stones. Please look at the sources listed below for Web sites for the mines in my article. The mine in Hiddenite also has a nice campground.

The Chimney Rock Gemstone mine is located in Chimney Rock North Carolina and offers flume mining as well as a nice gift shop. Kids like nothing better than getting wet and dirty while finding cool stuff like gemstones. And Chimney Rock offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the state of North Carolina. Part of the movie "The last of the Mohicans" was filmed in this part of North Carolina.

Lucky Strike Recreational Gold and Gem Mine in Marion North Carolina is another one that offers a camp ground. They offer gold mining at the flume via panning and have a restaurant there on the premises. If gold isn't you thing then buy a bucket of dirt and look for some rare gemstones while visiting the site.

Exploring materials using the sluice at the Emerald Hollow mine sounds like fun!
