North Carolina Representative Wants to Tax Money Wired Home by Illegal Immigrants

No Compassion (or Reason) in Cleveland's Conservatism

Junior
A North Carolina legislator has recently proposed a bill that would place a tax on wire money transfers sent home by illegal immigrants living in the state of North Carolina. The bill would have MoneyGram and Western Union outlets literally run identification checks on Hispanic individuals wiring money to non-U.S. locations.

Cleveland supposes that this is a good way to 1) discourage more illegal immigration to North Carolina, which already has one of the nation's highest percentages of illegal immigrants living in its borders, and 2) create a sort of built-in background check on illegal aliens' identities and status, so as to "catch" existing illegal "aliens."

In sessions with the N.C. House Judiciary Committee, Cleveland compared his bill to mandatory ID checks on potentially underage persons buying alcohol and tobacco products. These measures involve checking the identification of anyone appearing under the age of, say, 35 or 40. Instead of the convenience store's "We ID Under 40," you can imagine the Western Union store having a sign that says "We ID Broken or Accented English." One wonders if our own President, whose English has been notoriously goofy at times, would be ID'ed under this policy.

This bill is irrational. It is a perfect example of a superficial patch-up job on an issue that needs fundamental reform and overhaul. Where the basic immigration laws are weak and ill-enforced, legislators like Cleveland, rather than reforming the system, attempt to patch up the problem with yet more laws that will be even more difficult to enforce. Their goal? To get votes for displaying their bigotry and hate of that which is foreign or other, in this case Mexicans. Cleveland makes clear overtures to the bigoted crowd on his personal website, rejoicing in his low ranking by the supposedly left-wing, and evilly Raleigh-based, North Carolina Center for Public Policy.

The bill is also racist. Its enforcement will require racial profiling. It is a sneaky way to get around having to propose a less popular "English Only" or "English as Official Language" law. It will never fly with the Due Process provisions of the Constitution's 13th/14th/15th Amendments.

Finally, the bill is uncompassionate. The workers it effects have precious little money to begin with. They are not "stealing good jobs" from Americans; they are working all day in the sun picking crops for less than minimum wage, getting paid in cash because they can't open bank accounts. They are doing jobs that Americans don't want to do in the first place.

A rational solution to illegal immigration will be complex and will require an overhaul of the current federal immigration system. It will be one of the deciding factors in the upcoming elections and one of the most important issues facing the next federal Administration, as our current Administration has shown itself to be unwilling or incapable of addressing the problem in a serious manner.

  • Illegal immigration reflects lax enforcement of existing laws, or dysfunctional existing laws.
  • Is the solution to create yet more laws?
  • Is it right to tax away the money of people who work for less than minimum wage?
To put things in perspective, many Mexican and Guatemalan immigrants (legal or not) are happy to work for less than minimum wage because of the great purchasing power of the U.S. dollar compared to the Mexican peso or Guatemalan quetzal.

It's about time we started hitting these people where it hurts. There is no reason why these people shouldn't pay their fair share of taxes. Americans are sick and tired of supporting the illegal leaches of Mexico.

Every State should tax all monies sent abroad via money gram, western union and any modes of wire transfers by legal and illegal aliens. Those taxes could help offset the flow of cash leaving this country to support those receiving the funds. Taxing wired money sent abroad would also assist the USA overburdened social services and infrastructure. Additionally each state in this union should collectively work together to pass the same strict laws that make it impossible for any illegals to benefit from assistance and that deal strong handedly with their illegal immigration delima. This country is going to HELL in a HANDBASKET and illegal immigration is one of the main causes. Illegals are saturated in every one of our States and they take and take and never give anything positive back to this country except over population, neighborhoods and disrespect for the laws of this country. They should go home and march in their streets against their own failed governments.

Wow. Ouch! I echo LTB's perspective. Certainly compassionless.
